I have had PTSD for 13 years. My biological father, who was a vietnam veteren, left me when he attacked my mum and went to jail. My mum married a man who abused his family and others outside it. He attacked me for socialising with friends at work one- day and I got post traumatic stress disorder.
The post traumatic stress disorder wiped most of the emotional memories of attachment from my brain. It took 12 years of therapy to re-gain enough memories to function emotionally again. When I was functioning normally again, I started working. I turned my family line around. I couldn't have easily ended up just like my mum, but I turned it all around.
I work 20 hours a week, am married, a mum, am saving for a deposit on a home, own my own new car and have a degree. I have few friends, but they are good ones. I have been on 3 4 day holidays in the last 3 years. I always try to remember to have compassion for myself.
I liked the phrase." My life was like a fairy-tale. I didn't put with the shit and lived happily ever after."
