This.

I used to be all for gun control. I used to be all for the type of restrictions, testing, and...

What people don't understand they will condemn or FEAR! No more than a pencil can create an artist so is no gun can create a criminal. Guns, knives, ball bats, chainsaws or a tree branch can be a tool for an evil brain intent on harming another human being through violence. When in a war or a so called government sponsored authorized killing spree for some agenda, I have often looked by at my experience. The horrendous, incomprehensible, murderous capabilities that our government has in almost every corner of the world, is without measure. As I had to witness beautiful, mountain jungles with all its beauty of growth abounding, transformed into a area that resembled the surface of the moon in mere seconds. Hundreds of human beings completely vaporized, only to be authentically numbered or counted by the remains of a left ear. Results of such a unique, effective killing machine flying 7 miles above the earth, pin point dropping hundreds even thousands of items weighing up to 20,000 lbs. each, of explosives, metal fragments and fire. Each item would simply disintegrate anything within an area of 1000 yards, kill any living being within 2000 yards with fragments and concussion and inflict some serious injuries up to 1 mile from its impact. Not to mention the hundreds of other very unique and effective devices made for one purpose and one purpose only.... to kill, maim and destroy. That was over 40 years ago just imagine what new killing devices we have sponsored and paid for in existence by OUR government today. In my years of pondering these facts, it is beyond any logical, rational or reasonable conclusion as to why all the hoop-plaa and BS objections any one would about private, law biding citizens own a gun. A gun that only shoots a single bullet at each pull of the trigger, in comparison to the governments millions of little guns that shoots up to half a million bullets a minute. Not even taking into consideration all the thousands of mass destructive devices that one can even count or name. Yet every pampered, ignorant, un-informed, government " will protect and save us" social goon in the country wants total gun control. Half of the criminals that have guns in this country are stolen or bought from other criminals who got them from our government. Does one think the stupidity of our government that, for example, freely gave millions of weapons to Mexico are still there in Mexico? If so you live in a box or just don't care. No, DOJ reports that thousands upon thousands of these "Government Gimmies" end up on our streets, in the hands of criminals committing violent acts against our society. No Gun Show can sell any weapon/gun without the same requirements and FBI clearances that any Gun Store is required to perform. This rumor or BS was created by the anti-gun government to spread their total control and final agenda to ban all guns from all people. If in doubt, go to any authorized gun show and purchase a gun, as I have. The go downtown in the "hood" and spread the word you want a gun, you'll have one in short order. But, you will notice the serial number has been filed off. Another federal law violation that carries a 5 year prison sentence to even have in your possession any fire arm without a legible serial number. Our problem is "CATCH AND RELEASE" END OF STORY.

I find the focus on "regular" gun ownership among some Americans as a way to preserve freedom a strange line to draw in the sand. The writers of the U.S. Constitution were familiar with single-shot musket types of arms. Anything beyond that is stretching the most concrete reading of the Constitution.
You are correct that the writers of the Constitution were only familiar with the single shot musket, and the single shot rifle. However the men who wrote the constitution all own the most modern military rifle of their day, and they did not restrict the ownership of military small arms in their writings.

We legislated against guns in Australia - and it worked.Gun suicides didn't morph into other types of suicides. We have had no more massacres.

Other than the politicians on both sides of parliament, criminals don't run wild in the streets.

I haven't read this whole thread but I found this image today.

Women still die from domestic violence on a regular basis. 62% of homicides of women in Australia occur in the six months of leaving an abusive relationship. If my father had been allowed to keep guns at home I would not, and none of my siblings, nor my mother, would be here today. He had to store them elsewhere. Lucky for us.

And despite the argument that guns are essential in America to protect yourself - well the massacres keep on occurring.

Surely if that actually worked, if people having guns to protect themselves was effective in real time, then surely the massacres would cease?

I don't understand that argument, because there is living proof each day that that is clearly not working.

In every state that has changed their laws to shall issue regarding concealed carry permits, there has been a reduction in violent crime.
I am still researching Australia sense the banning of guns, but every statistic I have seen shows an increase in violent crime, and gun related crimes.
However the sites I have seen are biased, so I am trying to find a site that is neutral, and provides statistics that are not slanted to prove a point.

The Rampage Shooting Index. Taken from a now-defunct website, it assembled data from around the world to construct a per capita mass shootings index that controls for population differences. [Update: Archived data based on OECD and other statistics can be found here.]

And since we’re just talking about members of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), we can assume these 34 countries are sufficiently “advanced” to enter into the discussion.

The bottom line: The United States falls from number one due to its frequency of 38 mass shootings from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013 (which would be number one without correcting for population) to number seven.

Security Magazine commented on the data findings:

Between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2013,there were 413 fatalities from mass shootings in the 34 member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). From the five-year period of 2008-2012, there were 373 total spree shooting fatalities.

According to the OECD’s latest version of the Rampage Shooting Index, a pair of deadly shootings in Switzerland in early 2013 pushed the U.S. out of the top five OECD nations for the most per capita fatalities, but the U.S. continues to have the most rampage shooting deaths (one reason could be its size – The U.S. population accounts for 25 percent of the OECD total). However, the U.S. saw a drop in mass shooting deaths from 93 in 2012 to 68 in 2013.

The U.S.’ index of 0.12 per 5,000,000 places it behind Norway (recall the Anders Breivik massacre), Finland, Slovakia, Israel, and Switzerland – at half the ratio.

Another thing one might note: The top 5 countries for mass shootings per capita all have “restrictive” gun policies."

The chart: (note by the chart the U.S. position would be 6th not 7th as the source article claims)

like you have a way of knowing how an accident will influence someone's whole life.

*rolls eyes* This is ridiculous.

I think we should ban cars too because they kill far more people than guns, drunk or sober....

*rolls eyes some more* Even more ridiculous.

But he wasn't acting like he was swingin a 10 inch dick because he was packing.

Because he most likely had a micropenis. Yep, guys gotta pack heat to make up for what God didn't give them!

LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

No worries, I'm not laughing WITH anyone. I read through this thread and it is the best entertainment! I'm amazed at the level of paranoia that I see, even if you all can't! Sorry, but I much rather live my gun free life than feel I need some sort of weapon to feel safe. Sorry, but needing to pack heat is NOT going to heal you. Ya might want to check with the experts on this one......relying on anything outside of what is between your own two ears to feel safe isn't going to move you forward. I hope you all feel "safe" in your fake little worlds....Its sad, just sad.

We have no guns and we have no massacres, why if you have all those guns are there still massacres @RussH? I don't understand?

One in three women in Australia will live through domestic violence in their life times @RussH. If there are guns in those households they will most likely be used on the women and the children. No guns = a lot less deaths from domestic violence.

The gun suicides haven't morphed into another type of suicide either, which I was quite surprised by.

"most likely" is conjecture since there are no statistics about this @Ms Spock. Of the stats here in the most violent cities in the States, only one subscribes it to domestic violence in fact: Birmingham, Alabama.
