No, its not a medication used to treat PTSD but being on it for other conditions can seriously increase PTSD symptoms. I just want to give people the heads up. If your Dr. recommends it for any health issues, ask about alternatives first.

I thought the increase in anxiety and nightmares would ease up once I was off of it. I am 3 days into withdrawal now and I have been barley able to function. I was warned that being on it would increase my PTSD symptoms, but no one warned me about the withdrawal symptoms. I had to find out the hard way.

I am sure there a lot of medications out there that increase symptoms, but wit this being such a common one, I figured it was worth the warning. Especially since it can get worse while you withdrawal off of the medication if you have been on it longer than a week.

Did you go off it cold? or did you tapper off it? Prednisone is a steroid usually used to treat inflammation. it is always best to tapper off steroids and not go off them cold.

I tapered. 8 pills for 8 days. 7 pills for 7, 6 for 6 and so on except at the end was one pill for 5 days. It was used as a treatment for autoimmune disorder that my dr. said would have killed me in less than 3 days had I not gone to the hospital due to internal hemorrhaging.

I would have taken my bets and gone another route. The side effects are not worth it.

Good to see you tapper off, but sorry to hear it is giving you such trouble. I've never been on it for more than 2 weeks, looks like you were on it for about 1 month. Unfortunatly, prednisone is habbit forming and it sounds like 1 month is long enough to cause some toubling withdrawl. have you tried talking to your doctor about it? to see if there is something that can be done to help ease the withdrawl?

Prednisone is evil. I will never take it again. It made me feel very rageful and out of control.

Sorry you had to take it for so long but I am glad you are okay.

My daughter was on this over many years in childhood.....have always said that it had to have long term effect, seeing as I witnessed the short term effect. Saved her life...but........

When I was on it it was the worst. The only reason I could manage was it DID help the sickness I'd had for about 8 months by then that was causing more problems than it did. I was way more symptomatic for quite a while after coming off of it though, and I wasn't on that high a dose or for too long all considered.

@Jigsaw Puzzle I think my GP really feels helpless concerning it. He didn't prescribe it it was prescribed to me while I was in the hospital. I have been to see him a lot recently because I have to have my hemoglobin checked every week. I have told him about a lot of new symptoms I am having and he pretty much just chalks it up to the prednisone and says there isn't much he can do.

Just as a reminder that in medication-land "everything affects everyone differently"....

I <3 Prednisone!!! Love it. Really, really love it.

My son goes on & off of it all the time (no taper... The longest he's been on it is a year, more average a few weeks at a time) & no side effects there. Ditto Dexamethasone. He has fiendish difficulties with inhaled steroids (mood altering, massive weight gain, insomnia), but the oral steroids are perfect. If only they didn't stunt your growth & cause bone loss! Dagnabit!

I've been on pred or dex multiple times as well, although nowhere near as often. Same as TheKiddo, no side effects. Neither on them nor coming off them. I can breathe. That's it. Love. Love. Love. these meds.

So that it's a possibility one might react badly is something to be aware of, but it's far from a certainty.

I was prescribed it several times in the last 2 months for various physical conditions and ended up in the psych ward for a week! This stuff is bad news. It shot me up into a manic and I was not able to sleep for 5 days! It has taken me several long days and a lot of Bipolar meds to bring me down (I am also bipolar). Now I have some huge medical bills I have no hope of paying.

I would seriously not recommend this medicine to any of us, because it did not exactly help me with much of anything by comparison, in my opinion. Yes, I had pleurisy. Yes, I had shingles, etc. but really? I am changing Dr.'s. I need a Dr. that would recognize that you would not want to give these meds to someone who is Bipolar PTSD.

It raises BP and for me, causes my ears to ring, heart to race, and anxiety to rise.
However, last time it didn't. So I think it not only depends on the person but how their body is at the time, what it needs to be in balance, and stress levels overall.

And right before I took Pred, I was having major panics that I was dying of pneumonia. So you'd think it would send me over the edge. Ironically, it was the only time it was fine. I don't know why.

It can be rough but it's used for short periods in most cases. Anyone on it must taper because it can cause adrenal cortex insufficiency which can be very dangerous.
