How I Started Managing Symptoms Through Diet

@sun seeker That definitely does sound like a meticulous diet! I certainly hope it will start producing the desired effects for you soon; I guess the very least it will do for you is not add any additional bodily imbalances that could affect you negatively. I'd love to hear if you see any improvements of any kind over the next couple months :)

Thanks for posting this interesting article. I have suffered with PTSD for many years and will defiently try your advice on eating less re-fined sugar. I know when I eat re-fined sugar my heart rate increases and can make me feel anxious which in turn could affect my PTSD. I have also read that blueberries help as they are full of serotonin.

I tend to see a healthy diet as an absolute necessity because of the link between PTSD and my body, thank you those who've mention the mind/body connection.

When the symptoms of PTSD first began to bare down on me, I thought it was my diet causing it because I was doing hack diets consecutively, trying paleo, trying metabolic, and so on. When the symptoms hit hard at first I was in paleo and I immediately thought paleo was a horrific scam, lol. I know better now.

I've done probably every type of system out there and I've finally found out just through studying and practice what works for me and it helps me a ton. I eat only organic whenever possible, and I do everything I can to choose only non gmo. Actually, I'm sensitive/allergic to a lot of the chemicals, especially round up, if somebody sprays roundup around me I'm in bed for days.

Another important one for me to avoid is MSG. MSG is used in labs to make rats obese. It hacks your mind/body to cause you to crave bad foods and hijacks your metabolism. Then of course sugar. I'm off of it, except for which can not be avoided because it's built into the food already.

I eat a lot of green foods, chlorella to remove environmental toxins and boost blood cell count. I get most of my protein from organic hemp protein powder, I make a smoothie with it, bananas and frozen mango chunks. Meat here and there. Not to ruffle any vegan feathers (I've been vegan) but I do think dietary cholesterol is important because it's what your body uses to manufacture hormones, no cholesterol and the hormone factory begins to go wonky, something we already struggle through with PTSD. And even some animal fats, but not a lot. As long as I'm getting egg yolks, I'm pretty good in that department. I would probably eat more meat if I had more money.

I also stay away from fluoride as it is a neurotoxin and the brain fog is already bad enough.

There is no way to be mostly organic and non gmo unless you don't eat out much, so I've gotten pretty good at cooking, I'm starting to grow my own food, and I've actually found this to be very meditative and enjoyable, except for doing lots of dishes. Usually when I give in and eat out it's because I don't want to do dishes. lol Overall I would say that good eating, cooking and growing food has been a silver lining for me in all of this.

I look at the healthy diet as one important aspect of the overall management of PTSD. It's like putting gas in a lawn mower, completely necessary, but the lawn still isn't going to mow itself.

Thank you for the topic @annexthecelt!

Just curious if your diet change is still helping. I went vegan for a year not so long ago and it did help. I have since fallen off the Vegan course and am trying to find motivation to get back on.

Cool. Happy to hear your success story. I have noticed this in myself as well. But I am more affected by...

Jass,

Just curious, what autoimmune disease do you have? This is my first time hearing that wheat can affect you if you have an autoimmune disesase. Thank you.

Hi @Happy_Buddha : Thanks for asking the question. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and it's an autoimmune disease where your own immune system attacks your thyroid gland. Stress affects my thyroid and thyroid affects depression. It's all a vicious cycle for me.

@annelaclair I fail to see how your PTSD could have been 'nearly cured'. Maybe that's a...
Sorry but I believe PTSD can be cured. It is a scientific fact. I don't like being or saying things at conflict with others but everything I have researched says that some do get CURED. In fact saying and believing that is really not truthful nor helpful. I'm proof of that, even though I've struggled with ptsd my whole life. Just my 2 cents. Thanks.

This information from the VA talks about "recovery" and how it is a long process and different for everyone. I have been abused since the age of 2 (that's as far back as I can remember), and it was severe. We all have had different experiences we have to deal with. I have depression and ptsd, they have to both be treated, we all see different doctors, take different medications, try changing our diets. Everyone is different and everyone has different recovery methods (as shown in the link) so to say it can't be cured is a falsity. Believing that will not help. Here is the research, led by more money than most. Yes it is sometimes expensive and sometimes free (I've gotten both). You just have to find the right combination. It is hard and easy to give up but what other choice do we have but to try everything? I tried everything too and diet does help so much.

Thanks for posting! I is wonderful to hear anyone say they are getting better. Yay for all of us. We made it here. Wonderful place to be in.

@Hopeful2me
Yay to you for being hope2me now :) Yes we can grow out of it. Its a new word in use ptsd growth. I belive we do have a choise. Soak in misery - as I did earlier today - or do something thatll change all though slow like going running which I did after soaking. Aint saying itll be a easy ride, but for most of us way better then the hellish misery.

And also I want to say that someone here - a supporter - called it injury. I so much like this description. It means Im injured and as we know most injuries can be cured with right medication ie food and activity, therapy and so on.

I've started on the vegetarian path this past Dec. Next year I'm planning on going gluten-free than vegan. Or vis versa, vegan first than gluten-free. I know I need to cut more sugar out of my diet, but I love that stuff especially in tea. I've avoided corn syrup, sodas and fast food for many years now. It has helped at least relieve some symptoms.

My problem is how to shop for more healthy foods in Southern America and living alone. Buying in bulk, especially fresh foods ends up as food waste. I don't care to cook much but want tasty recipes, but also want to avoid overly processed foods or packaged items. And I avoid soy/tofu/quinoa. So I'm left with lentils and beans which are delicious! But they take a while to cook... so now I'm trying to find simple crockpot recipes and plan out my meals more.

Hi everyone -- I'm here to share my story about how I halted the majority of my symptoms through di...

I wanted to share my husbands story as he eliminated gluten first then dairy then meat and eggs ..then caffeine...sugar...
My husband is a Military Veteran, and suffers from PTSD . His PTSD is not cured or gone he still has to cope and deal with his symptoms. However since making these major changes to his lifestyle it has completely changed our lives. First he eliminated the gluten and noticed almost immediately that he had a significant reduction in the debilitating nausea spells that were controlling his whole life...so He continued down this positive path of elimination and found himself Strictly Vegan and Gluten Free also sugar and caffeine free. he does notice still if for some reason he is abit backed up (constipated) he will get the odd short nausea spell nothing like what he was living with before. My husband has now been vegan and gf for 6 months. hes doing alot better than most of his peers , soldier suicide is on the rise... how many sisters and brothers do we have to lose before we realize that the food they are eating is killing them. & also that the pills doctors are prescribing are poison! my husband is also off all of his pill medication and strictly uses cannabis to treat his symptoms! hes been on an incredible journey of healing & i really hope that this inspiring story can help another perhaps even save a life...give yourself some quality of life, it all starts with what we put into our mouths. peace & love & light xo

btw this goes for everyone & anyone living with ailments.. our whole family is vegan gf & every one of us saw positive changes in our health overall!!!!!!!!!!
