What To Never Say To A Ptsd Sufferer

"Why are you so weak that you can't deal with this without taking medications.."

My mother said this to me at my birthday dinner this past weekend. She's been upset with me for taking psychiatric medications..and is not supporting my treatment as a result. This really messed with me, because for so long I didn't seek treatment because it made me feel weak. How ironic..

Good post. Since my family has a generational history of the abuse and for many other reasons, they do not know I am in therapy this time. I can hear the sighs and see the eye rolls. I guess my favorite is "you think you were the only one? What about ME!?" So if no one else in my family feels they need therapy there is much more wrong with me since I do.... Okkkkk

I wrote on another website that I had a PSTD service dog, and someone responded, "Don't call yourself "disabled", you are trivializing people who really are disabled. You simply have a bad habit of over-reacting."

Right, don't tell Social Security or my other long term disability company that I'm not disabled. Most of all, don't tell my dog.

My brother killed himself a few weeks ago, and the police sent a Trauma Interventionist to talk to my son and I while they investigated and removed his body. I told her I had PTSD, and I was afraid of decompensating. I told her my brother also had PTSD, and she said, "Oh, was he in the military?" What kind of Trauma Interventionist is that? Not a very helpful one.

What's been said to me that makes me choke:

"Oh. What's it from?"
"Yeah, everybody seems to have that now."
"So do you have, like, flashbacks and stuff?"
"Oh that must be really depressing."
"I didn't know you were in the military! You don't seem like the type."
"Wow! And I always thought of you as such a strong person."
"Yeah, I guess some of us just don't know how to move on from things."

And one of my favorites: "So when will you be over it?"
