Is ‘You’ll know when it’s the right time to end therapy’ just a big myth? (And how do I unattach from my therapist to end therapy?!)

Thank you, Friday… I hadn’t thought about it this way but what you’ve said makes sense. I’ll try to remember it!

I think if I bring it up again she will just repeat her usual about it's my choice if I want to continue or finish, and that she will always be there if I want to get in touch...she just doesn't really say anything when I say about ending therapy being a painful loss and difficult for me to...

Yeah...it's a strange way to wrap up a longstanding relationship that's been really important....pressing 'leave' on a zoom call! In terms of exploring this with her...it sort of feels like there isn't really an in to talk more about ending therapy with her...because, whenever I've brought it...

Is ‘You’ll know when it’s the right time to end therapy’ just a big myth? (And how do I unattach from my therapist to end therapy?!)

Can I ask - how did you go about your therapy ending? Did you find a way to make it feel less painful in terms of the attachment/loss? Or is it just that you've got to suck it up - it will be painful, but you know you'll survive, so just get on with it?!

Is ‘You’ll know when it’s the right time to end therapy’ just a big myth? (And how do I unattach from my therapist to end therapy?!)

I think I feel embarrassed by it as it sounds like a childish, simplistic - and perhaps romantic - notion of ending therapy. Of both how I’ll know. And how it will actually be.

Another thing this makes me think of....and I feel silly writing it but... Early on in my time with T (when I saw her in-person), she casually mentioned that there were some clients that she hugged eg at the end of session. I had a massive reaction to that - got really triggered, felt really...

Apologies (again!) for how long it's taken me to come back to properly respond. Busy-ness around the time I posted, and some health issues...and, I think, probably some avoidance as well! A couple months on from my OP and I am still in the same place, still not making a decision! As a few of...

    Neurodivergent vs neurotypical

Also, just to add: for me personally the term neurodivergent isn’t that helpful for reflecting on myself. Because, it’s so broad and encompasses numerous conditions (I know not everyone will like me referring to them as conditions - no offence meant, I’m not sure what the best term is?!) So, if...

Thanks for all the replies so far and apologies for not responding to them sooner. I have read all your comments as you posted them - I just haven’t had much headspace to properly process and gather my thoughts (just busy-ness over Christmas etc) Still reflecting and mulling… Will respond...

    Neurodivergent vs neurotypical

@silverlinings1069 - there are quite a few active members here who are ND (ADHD, on the autistic spectrum, dyslexic and so on) and several posts about it if you want to do a search. I had a late ADHD diagnosis this year so I’m still learning what that really means for me. In terms of what...

    Neurodivergent vs neurotypical

Yes, of course everyone is unique. But Neurodivergent is just an umbrella term for people who have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia etc - people whose brain differences/wiring affects the way their brain works. It doesn’t mean everyone else (‘neurotypicals’) are exactly the same as each...

Is ‘You’ll know when it’s the right time to end therapy’ just a big myth? (And how do I unattach from my therapist to end therapy?!)

I think it might be time for me to wrap up therapy. But I’m finding the whole decision quite confusing and I just keep going round in circles with it... As a bit of background: I’ve been seeing my therapist regularly for 10 years now (way, way longer than I ever imagined I would – I initially...

I’m in the UK and I would say this Thursday. I don’t know anyone who would say next Thursday in that context so it’s not, in general, a UK thing.

ADHD ADHD - ways of working in therapy?

Taking short breaks in a session is a good thought. I don’t generally feel I need a break in the moment (I’m actually really ok just sitting still for ages, so don’t feel a desire to get up and move, for example). But I do have a tendency to go off on tangents and end up wittering on about all...

ADHD ADHD - ways of working in therapy?

So, I’ve always thought I’m pretty rubbish at therapy. Just, not very good at doing it. My T has always said there’s no right or wrong way to do therapy. And I get that. But… It’s probably not so much that I feel like I’m doing it totally ‘wrong’ as such. I think it’s more…I’ve always found it...

    Fidgeting during session

Yes, I fidget a lot in sessions - especially when we are diving into more uncomfortable stuff, or when I’m feeling anxious, or when I am struggling to concentrate. I think fidgeting can discharge anxiety and be a way to self-sooth so it can be useful. I do therapy online and I have a...

    ADHD LD’s and ADHD

Several members here have ADHD and/or other neurodivergence. If you don’t find other platforms/forums, you can still connect with people here about those things. I haven’t found another site/internet forum either. I did find a useful Facebook group so, if you are on Facebook, that’s an option...

Thanks. I have been in therapy for a number of years. Not for ADHD as the ADHD is a very recent diagnosis. I have always found some aspects of therapy sessions difficult - some examples: difficulty staying focused during sessions; over talking and then running out of time so I feel frustrated...
