The Human Soul
(Values)
Carl Jung

If one wishes to understand the human soul, he need not bother with experimental psychology of the laboratory, which can tell him practically nothing. He would be better advised to take off his academic robes, and wander with open heart through the world; through the horrors of prisons, insane asylums and hospitals, through dirty, dirty dives and houses of prostitution or gambling, through the drawing rooms of elegant society, the stock exchanges, the socialist meetings, the churches and revival meetings of the cults, to experience love and hate, passion in every form, in his own being...He will come back with wisdom which no five-foot shelf of textbooks could give him and he will be capable of being a doctor to the human soul.

Making a Difference
(Values)
Anonymous

As the old man walked the beach at dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea.

Finally, catching up to the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.

"But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish," countered the other. "How can your effort make any difference?" The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw him safely in the waves. "It makes a difference to this one," he said.

Different Drummer
(Values)
Henry David Thoreau

Why should we be in such haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

Those Only are Happy
(Values)
John Stuart Mill

Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some subject other than their own happiness, on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means but as itself an ideal end. Aiming thus at something else, they find happiness by the way.

Central Theme of Existentialism
(Values)
Gordon W. Allport

To live is to suffer - to survive is to find meaning in the suffering. If there is a pupose in life at all, there must be a purpose in suffering and in dying. But no man can tell another what this purpose is. Each must find out for himself, and must accept the responsibility that his answer prescribes. If he succeeds he will continue to grow in spite of all indignities.

When You Get Into a Tight Place
(Commitment)
Harriet Beecher Stowe

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.

I hope you don't mind me adding one of my favourite quotes...

In the midst of winter, I found there was within me,
an invincible summer.

Hey! Nightowl, How the heck' are you? I like your favorite quote. You say you have other favorites. Share them here with us, anytime. And, if you want to be brave tell us what makes this one a favorite with you...in length if you want to. Always glad to here more from you!

One of my favorites is called Popcorn, and the reason why I like it so much is I can identify with it, over such an extended period of my life. Though nearly every day of my life, not every single day, as I did get much relief when I found treatment for my PTSD back in app. 1993 to 95, but then I kind'a lost touch. And, in those early yrs. alcohol may have helped some. Well, here goes anyways:

Popcorn
(Community)
Andre Auew

"You can't get any popcorn, child. The machine is out of order. See, here is a sign on the machine."

But he didn't understand. After all, he had the desire, and he had the money, and he could see the popcorn in the machine. And yet somehow, somewhere, something was wrong because he couldn't get the popcorn.

The boy walked back with his mother, and he wanted to cry.

And Lord, I too felt like weeping, weeping for people who have become locked-in, jammed; broken machines filled with goodness that other people need, and want, and yet never come to enjoy, because somehow, somewhere, something had gone wrong inside.

Commitment
(Commitment)
W.H. Murray

Until one is committed, there is some hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which calls countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would have never occurred. A whole stream of events, issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets:

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

I like this quote by Thoreau because I feel validated as a unique individual when I read it:

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. ~Thoreau

We are all wonderful, unique, creative people here. I revel in each of our unique strengths!
