New Here
Hi, I have Developmental Trauma Disorder and have recently been reading about EMDR. I would like to look into trying it. I have multiple repetitious traumas especially during childhood. Can you recommend someone who is a good therapist overall and also good at EMDR?

Another question if anyone has any idea... I have a regular therapist of two years. He does not do EMDR, and he's mainly psychoanalytic. Is it ok to keep seeing him while I get EMDR with another therapist, or do I really have to stop in order to get EMDR?

Thanks for your advice!

I would visit this maybe initially, you may well have to contact the register of therapists and seek confirmation of how good they are.

I wish you every success with this but offer one simple piece of advise if I may. EMDR is a very aggressive therapy and can intrude into the patients Psyche rather too deep on occasion. For me it nearly killed me yet for many it can be the wonder treatment. All I am saying therefore if to be careful and fully research wether it really is the therapy for you.

Take care and Kindest regards.

Laurie

Oh and a big UK:hug: if you accept it :D

I received EMDR and found it immensely helpful. I suffered from relentless, full-body pain as the result of trauma and saw it 75% gone after six sessions.

One key recommendation I have is that you find someone who uses a light bar. Seriously. Not many people do, but it's incredibly important to the neurological processing of the trauma. It also signals that the therapist is highly trained/professional.

I'm sorry to hear about @Santa_Laurie 's experience and affirm its validity. However, I would not fear or completely rule out the treatment as an option.

Oh, and seeing your regular therapist during EMDR can be extremely supportive and should in no way harm you.

P.S. I can't post the link (I've tried a million times/different ways), but google EMDR. Click on the website that's just EMDR then a dot then a com. On the left hand side select "Find a Clinician." From there do a search.

Try Sidran.org They have a referral service for trauma therapists.

I think that EMDR is quite effective, but it can be a bit more problematic for ongoing types of trauma vs single incidence trauma. There are a lot of threads here on the forum about it. If in doubt, give it a try. It may work for you, and it may not. If it doesn't work for you, no worries as there are a number of other types of therapy that you can do in order to process your trauma. EMDR was ineffective for me and I ultimately found a way to process my childhood traumas using a different type of therapy. Good luck!

Solaras point is probably the most valuable advice you could be given , if you have complex traumas you have to be very careful about how you approach treating them , in some cases both EMDR and Prolonged Exposure therapy are not appropriate for many complex traumas as working on one will cause conflict with the others - i have tried both therapies and it was a nightmare for me and i have been advised by a very good trauma specialist not to do either - the conflicts that arose are horrific and can drive me to places I don't need to be

Thank you all for your replies. I will look into all the online sources you've given me but still would like a personal recommendation if anyone has had a good experience with someone. Especially for multiple trauma in light of what I've been told.

I know it's an intense therapy and hope to do as much research and preparation beforehand and during to give me the best chances ( and of course stop if I need too)! I certainly don't need more negative stuff to happen to me!

I have not started reading any books yet, but listened to two long lectures on youtube given by Francine Shapiro (the developer of EMDR). She only seems to say that it works for multiple trauma, not about it being more risky, just taking longer. Can anyone point me in any direction to learn about this complication and what it might mean for my situation? I know I can just call up a bunch of therapists but I don't want to do research at first with therapists who want me as a patient and therefore might downplay things or be too optimistic.

Does it depend on what kinds of trauma? A lot of mine, especially the most pervasive, continuous trauma has to do with absence. So with continual neglect, rather than direct abuse (though some of that as well both verbal and physical and great danger), and extreme bullying by children, and other such things. I hope my situation does not end up being bad for this treatment.

Also, shero22, what is the light bar you're speaking of and why is it so much better? I only think I know of the hand held devices and the wand things they wave in front of your eyes.
