I am having a horrible week, I am so on emotional overload. My Pug pounced my old cat earlier today. She was crying bad this afternoon and could not walk with her back leg, so to the vet we go. They took x rays and her leg has a compound fracture. They tryed to pin it in surgery but her bones keep splintering as she is soooo old. So, the vet has her sedated at the office and said that she has less than 50% chance, he will have to put her down more than likely. My 20 year old son has had her as his baby since diapers, she is 20 and her name is Puss Puss. I just want to bawl. I need to call the vet in the morning, but I think we are going to have to face the fact we are probably going to have to let her go. I am sick, depressed, mad, and just numb. This on top of all the other things life has doled to me this week, and my arm hurts like heck, I am just done, put in a fork. My son is so upset, I cannot console him. I feel so lost.

Sorry to hear that, Port. Do what is best for puss puss according to the vet. I know how hard it is.

Portabella, but is leg amputation an option? I know from many examples, that even older cats can do well with only three legs left. My mom has such a cat. I would suggest you try to see an orthopaedic surgery specialist, if one is availible in your area.

There is one thing to remember. Every living thing has to leave this world at some point. We all have limited time here. I feel that not the duration of this time spent here, but the quality of it is what matters. Well, I am sure Puss Puss had the best poissible life with you. I am sure she is thankful, and that she was gicing the good time back to you and your son. Try to talk to your vet, discuss the possible options, see the specialist.

I wish you and Puss Puss a good luck.

I am sitting here waiting for the vet to open. Had a full blown panic attack at 3:30 a.m. and have been gloomy and alone since then. I have this strong feeling the night did not go well and the only way to describe this is I am "hard timing" it right now with such a strong feeling of impending doom. I just have a very strong feeling this day is not going to be "okay". I spoke to my son yesterday concerning a possible amputation, don't even know if they could do it on a back leg with the cat being so old and frail. But....he would not want her to suffer, or have the inability to walk, he loves her so much. Grandma is taking my youngest this morning so that we can handle any affairs with puss puss, plus he is so full of energy and right now is not a great time as our nerves are fried. My older boy said he would come home tonight after work and stay until he has to go to work tomorrow, to help with the little one so that I can help and be with the one that is devastated.

In a perfect world they would say that she had a turn for the best and could come home to heal. But....I worked for this vet for years, years ago and I know this is not a perfect world. I will get through this, but I just hope my eyes don't swell shut and that I don't get to puking. If this does happen, we have decided on Cremation and we will take her somewhere very beautiful. My mom said we should put her in our garden, but....what if we ever move? So...I would rather place her in the mountains in Gods Garden and that way we could remember her there.

She made it through the night and as of last x ray about 2 hours ago, pin in leg is still in place. We are discussing amputation if the pin does not work.

Oh, that sounds like hopeful news, Portabella. I know what an ordeal it is to tend to beloved old cats. Sending prayers for you, your family, and puss puss.

Portabella, did you work for a vet? This is what I am doing now. I am a part-time anesthesia technician at the biggest emergency hospital in the state. Well, I suggest you to discuss all the options with the doctor. From my own experience, I can say that cats generally do well with three legs.
I understand you are concerned with Puss Puss surviving anesthesia. Even if not... To go under the general anesthesia is actually the best way to go, the way I wish for myself when time comes.
    Good luck again.

Well, I will first explain that I have not been able to access the forum for a couple of days, Kept getting a "Error" message and when I investigated it I was told it was the Ptsd forum server, so I just waited hoping I could get back on soon as I have been having a rough time. Alot has happened. First off, Puss Puss was not healing with the pin in her leg. We called and checked on her Thursday before the vet closed and he was still optomistic, but then when I was on the road picking up my other son Dustin to have him home for the upsetment, the vet called and talked to my son Paul, Paul called me and then I called the Vet. It was about 5:eek:o p.m. Thursday and he was closing but had his assistant take blood and urine to check on her values. Puss Puss's glucose was off the charts meaning that she is a severe diabetic and thus would never heal. Then to add the final blow, she was going into renal failure from the diabetes. I had to make a decision and I had him put her to sleep permanent. I came home and just bawled. I had Reager Chaney Funeral home pick up her remains that night so she could be kept refrigerated until friday morning when she was transported by the funeral home to the animal Crematorium in Ft. Collins, approx. 100 miles away. Her ashes will be delivered to us probably Tuesday. My son took it horrible as did I. Paul layed over the foot of my bed Thursday night and stated, that this is the first time in 18 years he will not be sleeping with a cat. So, we remedied that, we got a new baby yesterday, approx. 16 weeks, a bit of a large kitten, but very sweet. It was bottle fed as its mother was not present since less than two weeks old. It has no name yet as my son has not named it as of yet. He wants something mystical, its black and furry, and very petite female. Paul said if any of you have suggestions for a great name he would take it into consideration and appreciate it. So....that is about all on the Vet story for now. The bill is going to be scary. The cremation was scary price wise too. Ugh!!!!

Oh, T, I am so sorry about Puss Puss. But I am glad you have a new baby. What an awesome name! I am a Pagan you know. Wiccan that is. However, I do not know the language or native dialect. I just practice positive meditation, nature preservation, believe in reincarnation, and practice positive spells for health and well being. I'm a Christian Wiccan, go figure! lol! Well, I'll write ya soon my friend.
    Love,
    Marilyn
