- SIgh! Gunna try this again. I do not live in New Zealand. Neither does my vet. We are Australian. That is an Australian flag underneath my username.

My vet goes bush all the time by himself. He usually takes a dog and sometimes a horse. Its the
get together with a few buddies
part that is hard. I would like to encourage him to socialise more with other vets, but his mates all live in different parts of the country.

Oh I'm sorry, I'm such an idiot, I should know that.. the Aussies used to come over and train with us and we loved them, I really wanted to switch to their army. lol I understand going into the bush, I used to dress in my fatigues, grab my ruck and disappear into the mountains for days just because the bush isn't a vulnerable environment for me. Sure there are things out there that could attack me like bears but I was ok with that, it was a comfortable threat. Yesterday and today my back has been really bad, and as a consequence when I went out in public yesterday I was very hypervigilant which in turn brings on intrusive memories, tremors, etc.. by last night I was a wreck. Today I've pretty much stayed home. On your vets problem with his mates being across the country, even just a meeting a couple times a year would help. Maybe plan some bush time together. I get together with other vets on Mondays, none of us served together but we all served so we view each other the same way as if we had served together. And that last point is also of possible use to your vet, if you have a veterans hospital near you that is a great place to connect. In our group we have guys in their 60s on down to their 20s but we all relate and trust each other.

My vet is in his mother's home town visiting his parents who are in an old age home there. Last night he wondered down to the Returned Serviceman's Club, had a few beers with the good ol' boys. Turns out one of them knew his uncles. He has invited the fellow to come and stay with us next time he is down our way. Nice for him to catch up with other vets.

@CS67ART

Have you ever looked into Team Red White and Blue? It's a program for both members of the community and veterans/ currently serving.
Chances are, there is someone interested in camping.

The idea is to bring community and military together to help civilians understand veterans and connect the vets back into civilian life.

My vet doesn't want to connect back into civvy life. Every time he tries it just pisses him off. He went pack saddling (camping from horseback) for a few days with some civvys. First, they told him they would introduce him to being out in the bush. FFS - where do they think he did business for 25 years? Then they got lost because they wouldn't give him the map because they wanted to show him around. He had to take it off them and get them back onto the right track. Then when he made them a slap up breakfast in the morning one of them said "Are you sure you weren't a cook in the Army?". Lol - he's lucky he still has his front teeth. You don't ask a paratrooper whether he was a cook!

F*cking civvys!

@Sighs
I had to laugh at him being a "cook."
I'm sorry that happened to him.

Team RWB has a lot of vets and currently serving. The one I connect with is mostly currently serving, vets, and the civvies tend to be family members.

PTSD is the essence of our inability to control ourselves, its not the persons fault just like any other medical issue.

There's one in the Seattle area that connects through Joint Base Lewis McCord.
RWB has a national website that lists all the teams. You can find your local one there.
