Confident
So, yet another profile piece appeared about Terry Richardson, the fashion photographer who has been accused of predatory behavior by his models, this time in New York magazine. There's no ambiguity about his behavior. He produces pornographic photographs of teenage girls aspiring to be models whom he just met fellatioating him. He's clearly using his position to take advantage of these young models. No, it's not rape, because these models are giving a legal consent, but the context includes a power imbalance that makes consent beside the point. The details in the profile are horrifying (I don't recommend reading it).

I'm just shocked that he's not ostracized at this point. Ok, yeah, New York magazine is taking advantage of the controversy surrounding him to get page views, but still ... you'd think people would be boycotting New York magazine for featuring him on its cover. But they're not, and the comments below make it clear that he has supporters. He has supporters throughout the fashion industry, and he has a girlfriend and a female assistant (quoted in the article) who enable his work.

The good news is that H&M and other fashion outlets have stopped giving him work.

Still, I find it difficult to believe that I live in a world where such a predator can get away with this kind of behavior . I'm grateful that I mostly don't live there anymore. I've structured my life, so that I have different kinds of people around me now. I wish everyone had that option.

Its so much easier for everyone to turn a blind eye to evil. Uhm, remember how long the systematic elimination of Jewish people, etc went on before the rest of the world decided to get involved? (Referring to WWII). This phenomenon is nothing new, unfortunately.

@Solara
You're right: inaction is easier than confrontation. That happened in my own personal history too, with people who should have known, deciding not to confront my abuser. I suppose this instinct leads to more harmonious communities overall, but it allows perps (especially those in power) to thrive. The good news is that Terry Richardson (and Dov Charney, the American Apparel guy, and Woody Allen) is being called out now.
