Canadian Right to Die Available for International Patients?

I just learned that in 2021 Canada passed a law that allowed people with chronic mental health disorders to choose death by euthanasia. Is it possible for people from other countries to go there to receive this service? I'm wondering if it's for Canadian citizens only. It's still illegal in the country I live in. Thank you.

I just looked more and it's not available for psychiatric patients until 2023 and you have to be a Canadian citizen so this post was an oops. I should've researched more before I wrote this.

I don't have an answer to your question. I hope you aren't considering suicide. With work we can get better.
There is no getting better for me. My mental illness is chronic. I have no quality of life and I just want to be able to die with dignity. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. This isn't a cry for help or attention. I'm in my thirties and I don't want to live out my natural life in the throes of constant mental anguish. This has been something I've pondered for decades.

That's so sad frog...very sorry for all your suffering. I know it feels impossible sometimes. Suicide is such a permanent decision.

I thought about it too but have seen improvement over the last 5 years. I went through several hospital stays and IOP. I've been in therapy for 5 years...4 x a month. Maybe those things helped me.

Do you mind me asking if you have done similar?

I just got out of an IOP and I see a trauma therapist and a general therapist once a week. I just realized I'm having a flashback and I'm dysregulated.
I'm still in contact with one of my abusers and I'm just learning I get overwhelmed by pain when I see them but I just can't cut them out. I love them.
I'm still learning. I'm not good at regulating yet.

There’s plenty of places in the States that offer that, largely Buddhist, you simply will not be able to expect insurance to pay out on a suicide (they won’t, even if you commit suicide in a country where it’s legalized). You will also -usually, except for in a few states- actually have to make the act yourself, rather than an assisted suicide where a doctor or family member provides the means & method.

Sounds like good realizations.

I did bring this up in your diary, but I'd just like to reiterate it here. I think death with dignity should be an inherent human right, but I also believe that my country does not have compassionate treatment for mental health problems that would prevent the people utilizing this service from requiring it at all.

It is also disproportionately utilized by minorities, disabled people, and homeless people. All the groups of people who are suffering the most, who our society abjectly is refusing to offer genuine assistance to. One woman who applied for it literally just wanted a smoke-free housing environment. Govt didn't give it to her so she killed herself? Another was a veteran with PTSD who was refused treatment.

Suicide is a solution, it's not the problem. Trite as that statement is, the problem is suffering. && Canadian citizens are being funneled into this program on the basis of a prolonged sense of utter hopelessness due to a total lack of medical care availability at all. & Hopelessness is the biggest precursor to suicide.

But all the same, if you did somehow manage to qualify for MAID, all that I would say is that I am very grateful to have met you & gotten to walk alongside you in part of your journey && I hope that whatever happens beyond death, if anything at all, you find some peace && stop suffering.

You don't think about any of this when you're in pain yourself. It's dystopian. There's so many people society doesn't want. I looked up statistics when I felt more lucid and you're correct.

Weemie, if you interact with me for any period of time you'll find that my mood swings are huge and disproportionate. The level of emotion dysregulation I experience is enhanced by bipolar 2 and PTSD. It's embarrassing. I'm not as bad as I was when I was younger but I have quite a bit of work to do. There's a part of me that's like a screaming, crying child and I let it take over sometimes because I don't catch it in time or I do stupid things I know will trigger me.
I'm glad I don't have access to this service and I'm glad there's not Soylant Green facilities around where I can just walk in and choose euthanasia. I was emotionally overwhelmed, mid-flashback, and I'm very sorry for this ignorant f*cking thread.

On the contrary! This is the exact kind of stuff that I'm talking about. My mom says the same thing. "Oh, once MAID is legal, maybe I'll use it [dark humor joke]." But 10 years ago, she would have been serious, as she tried to jump off the bridge.

Because the truth is, we don't have any real treatment for bipolar disorder here, doctors just accuse you of wanting attention and actively kick you onto the street. Now we're saying "go ahead and sign up to kill yourself!" && If you bring up these statistics, they just say, "oh, you're against compassionate death with dignity? That's illogical!"

Which means that more people who experience suffering that should be transient, will attempt to utilize this service as well. Many, many patients like you are going to end up dead because of this, and it's an absolute travesty. It's so, so important to highlight how f*cked up our culture of medical care is in my country.
