Other Dog Attacked by Other Dog

My dog was attacked in our dog park that does behavioral tests for aggression by a rescue pittie mix.

There was no warning. This dog did not bark or growl, just clamped on and started shaking him and wouldn't let go. The other owner lifted her dog up by the harness, which put my dog into the air by his ear and neck, and the dog continued to thrash him.

I remember it in flashes. I don't know why the dog eventually let go, but I think I may have hit the other dog.

My dog has two deep puncture wounds, a sprained neck, a badly bruised ear, and some superficial abrasion trauma to the neck.

The vet said my description of the dog attack is that this dog was aiming to kill.

I can't get my fur baby's screams out of my head. It's so hard.

I took the day off of work today.

That dog park has been a safe place to go for a year now. They do behavior screenings. I don't understand.

I will know more tomorrow but the dog park has preliminarily told me they will not give me the owner of the dog's information to ask for payment for the vet visit.

my dog was attacked in our own yard by my neighbors pit. I don't have an issue with pt bulls specifically. Lots of dogs attack more often. But when they bite and latch on it's terrifying. I can still hear my dog's screams if I think about it. It was a terrifying thing and I'm so sorry you and your dog went through that. I also think it's terrible that the owner didn't share contact info and offer to pay the bills. Take gentle care of yourself and your fur baby

How distressing for you and your dog.

That owner should have given you their contact details. Maybe they were also in shock in the moment and would like to pay for your dog's vet bill? Here's hoping and here's hoping the 'dog owner grapevine' comes up trumps about it.

How is your dog now?

Makes sense. They would be criminally liable in most countries for providing personal information to the person who assaulted or murdered the person whose info they gave out... and people get passionate about their pets. There’s really no way for them to know -legally- if you really want their info to send them medical bills, or to burn their house down. Regardless of how they feel about you, personally @Chitoshi would never....) if their judgment was wrong? It’s not a legal defense, and they’d be looking at jail time for accessory to _______, at the worst, and/or fines in the tens or hundreds of thousands.

In most places though, they’re perfectly capable of giving that info to 3rd parties (police, the vet themselves, insurance companies, animal control).

So SO glad your pup made it!!! That action is designed to snap their preys neck and rip open arteries/veins. It kills very fast. If the other dog had the leverage of being on the ground, instead of dangling off their harness in the air? Instead of badly injured, it’s doubtful your babe would have made it through. WELL DONE you & the other owner on your quick reactions. The two of you undoubtedly saved your pups life.

The deeply concerning part is that they didn’t try to cripple your dog’s legs, first. So they weren’t hunting/it wasn’t a deliberate act. It was, instead, a snap aggression. That means the other dog needs to be destroyed. Hopefully the other own knows that, and has already done so. If not? The police will need to make them. Those snap reactions make them unsafe for any species to be near them. As they’ll pass every behavior test known to man, but reach out and snap the neck of a dog, toddler, person sunbathing, whatever. It’s a touch of madness in some predators/scavengers, the urge to kill indiscriminately / to no purpose, that goes far beyond prey instinct.

Thanks everyone for your concerns and comments. I'll post more and reply in a few hours once I've eaten. My furbaby is sleeping now and has been all day. He's on 2 different kinds of pain meds and a broad spectrum antibiotic. Vet warned me they may need to shunt the deep puncture wound on Tuesday if it becomes infected despite our quick medical care.

The owners declined to release their contact information. I partially understand, but I am emotionally numb because I also don't truly understand.

Our vet called today to tell us the puncture wound meant we either would need to call animal control or they would, so my husband called animal control. I feel guilty.

There's nothing to feel guilty about. You are doing the right thing. I'm so sorry this happened.

My service doggo and I have been attacked 4 times in 8 years. I now have a slight/robust fear of unleashed dogs now... sigh. 3 of the 4 attacks were unleashed dogs in office buildings that had "never done it before." One was on a city street. A pit that got lose of its collar. All attacks scared the crap out of me.

Weirdly, my dog's service vest probably saved her life twice which is why she wears it even when off duty. (She has a different signal for work and play time.) But her vest was destroyed twice. The attack led to a destroyed vest... and a broken nail. It was at night and she was bleeding like crazy and we couldn't figure out where it came from so I just rushed her to the vet in the car of a total stranger my heart just pounding... I couldn't even think. (My vet is amazing and quickly found the source of all the blood all over both of us.)

- anyhow -

One of the attacks was walking into a dental clinic. A therapist had an emotional support / therapy dog that raced down the hall and I think my yelling for help woke up the whole damn building. The dog was little and I threw a chair between us and the dog and hid my dog and I both in a random closet.

Long and short, I reported it, the owner,
etc, etc. turned out the dog had an underlying medical condition that caused it to go suddenly off the rails that day in a way that shocked her. It was only because I reported the dog that she took the dog into the vet and found out, and never brought the dog back, keeping the whole building... and the dog much safer.

Please shirk off any guilt. Dogs are dogs and sometimes things just go wonky. It's hard. Let animal control do what they need to do to sort it out and keep everyone safe.

It is not your fault.

Please update us if you'd like... I'll be thinking of you both. Hoping for a good recovery.

My dog is recovering well.

I am not.

They ended up closing the small dog room in the park that we go to and had the trainer send me an email with the owner CC'd about how she recommended we not go to the big room since he is scared in the car.

Which he is, and isn't normally, until he gets in the parking lot and is greeted by a staff member or dog owner he knows. Then once he was in the small room he is fine.

My husband suggested we cancel our membership for now because it is too raw. The owner had already threatened me on Saturday for contacting animal control because if we didn't the vet said they were going to. So we had the opportunity to not villanize the other dog, which we took full advantage of making sure to indicate that it was an accident.

The dog park owners weren't cooperating with animal control and animal control contacted me a few times to update me and assure me she was treating the situation like an accident. She also said that she is concerned that they are not cooperating and may not be operating appropriately.

I did report what the park owner said to the animal control officer and she told me again I was doing the right thing and that the park owner was definitely threatening me. I hadn't categorized it as such until she said it.

I am grieving because we made friends at that park, and they are friends of proximity mostly, so the friendships will likely fade, but it was also a stress reliever for me until this happened.

I am not okay right now, and I know it's okay to not be okay. However, my husband says I am placing myself in the middle of the situation too much.

Maybe there was a plan already in place to close the room due to understaffing like they said, but I still feel I was the catalyst.

It's uncomfortable and I have been an anxious ball of anxiety for a week and a half now.

I feel like I didn't do the right thing. I feel so guilty. My husband says I am putting too much responsibility in my hands and that if the park owners are in trouble, they aren't in any more trouble than they have given themselves.

I am struggling to cope.

ugh. One of the times my dog and I were attacked the owners screwed up handling it and it was hard to not internalize it.

For me, taking on guilt that is not mine to take on can sometimes do two things for me - it can help me feel like I am are in control and it can ease the pain.

You went through a scary and terrible event that was out of your control. Now people are not taking care of their own responsibilities for when stuff like this happens,.. and it seems like you are taking responsibly for them.

You have gone above and beyond to protect the pup and handle this with style and grace. It is ok to not be ok, and I hope the pain lessens soon. You don't deserve it.

I'm glad your dog is bouncing back!
