Coffee

you mention rationing, but I see pioneers, lol. Different frames.
A third frame - Muslims from Arab countries (like Egypt) grow and drink chicory as a coffee replacement, since coffee is condemned by the Quran. I wasn't aware of the rationing and only dimly aware of the pioneer connection. I seem to recall chicory coffee is big in New Orleans too for some reason.

I wasn’t aware of that frame, but what you said makes the Egypt/New Orleans connection make perfect sense.

New Orleans may have a French name but it was possessed and governed longer by Spain than France. Spain of course has a long history of Islamic interactions, where the knowledge and spiritual preference of chicory could have been shared and culturally incorporated, and then passed to the settlers of New Orleans as a matter of common knowledge. #Nerd.

The best cup of coffee I ever had was in Israel. Turkish coffee. The Arabs make it which is a quote from an Israeli. You have to go to the Arabs to get that, he said, they are the only ones who can make it . It was like hash. I tried for years to replicate it here, but gave up.

Kind of off topic, but it’s probably not something folks notice much. The pioneer past isn’t far away here in the western half of the US. My grandmother‘s parents and their children settled and broke virgin land among the last of the Comanches in west Texas. Chicory coffee and other make-do’s were all a part of the horse and wagon expansion of the US.

This is so interesting because my wife and I are big history buffs and you are right the frontier culture is very much different from us here in the East or in the south East. Everything west of the Alleghenies lol.

Heheh. Here, in a nutshell, is the enigma that is the USA and why we don’t make sense to outsiders.

It is different. There is much beauty in the East and Southeast, but to someone like me whose immigrant ancestors arrived in Galveston and were never part of those cultures or lifeways, it’s far too crowded in your half 🤣.

I have both on different sides of the family . But rationing is living memory for so many . Post war babies in U.K. at least experienced rationing - and in my lifetime I remember reported queues for supplies in Soviet Union and east Berlin.

I am so glad i have choice over how i spend my money even when it’s not plentiful .

Different frames.
Different countries. I’m in the UK :)

I went to the coffee roaster place. I was not sensible in my coffee buying. Was hoping to buy small quantities of several coffees but they sell it prepackaged. But I still bought 4 packs, not thinking of course it won’t stay fresh forever. Anyways it’s done now.

Too late in the day for caffeine so my first try will be tomorrow. I forgot to ask for any decaf 🙄 I have a couple medium /darks, a medium n a light to try. It smells amazing 😻

Do they all have to be kept in the fridge? Or any after opening?

Light and moisture free. People say room temperature- in a sealed canister, and that a fridge is bad. I think of coffee a little like butter- We keep ours in the fridge because in the winter we have a range on in the kitchen, it’s ok for eggs, on the warm side for butter and imo impairs coffee, so grounds and beans go inside a sealed, dark pot in the fridge. It might be important to note we have a fridge I can see the temperature of easily and do not over cool . ‘Room temperature’ varies by a lot depending on the house hold. Alone I’d make do with the house at 12 or 14 degrees Celsius- Many houses crank it up to over 25:) , I’m sure my kitchen is warmer still many evenings I must check actually but my guess is around 30 Celsius ( far too warm )

Thanks, Im really pleased. I was quite sad at the prospect of having to leave my room to go out into the wild west that is the rest of the refuge to get a spoonful of coffee beans. Really glad I can keep em in my room. My room is always a heck of a lot cooler than most people like. I have food clips, and can put them in a drawer? Reckon that would do?

I don’t think I’ve tried chicory coffee, gotta vague idea it was big in rationing days.
It was an extender. The flavor and aroma are similar. Funny but Chicory is a rich source of inulin. It's a soluble fibre that aids digestion and supports the growth of good gut bacteria.
I just find it funny because coffee keeps me regular enough without more fiber...
