How does anyone get approved for disability when you cannot get any doctor to back up their own disability diagnosis???? I am going to lose my job because of the PTSD symptoms and I have told both my therpist and primary care this but they don't seem to get it or care. I cannot sleep a full night without waking up wide eyed and my brain is always on overdrive. I shake when in stressful situations, situtations that I previously had stress but not debilitating stress. I cry over the slightess thing. My stomach issues with this have affected my desire to eat which in turn has caused a 35lb weight loss. My eyes move back and forth rapidly when I close them, I have to touch them to stop it. These symptoms are adding to the stress of not knowing if I will ever be able to go back to work.
I had an emotionally, mentally and sometimes physically abusive father. These symptoms I am having are the same as when I was being abused. The severity of the symptoms depended on how much yelling and banging of fists was going on at the time of the abuse. I have always had a bad stress reaction when working in high stress situations. Can someone give me any advice with all of this?? I have exhausted the search options online.
Thank you, Lisa

Did your therapist diagnose you with PTSD? If so, can they call your doctor and let them know you have it? If your therapist is a Psy-D or a Phd, they can diagnose in the US. It takes a lot to be considered disabled with PTSD. For most people it can take years.

I have given them all my information as well as my doctors info. How does one work with all these symptoms? How does someone live like this 24/7? I am really understanding why we have so many people in the US with mental illness on the street.
Thank you for your reply.

So sorry you are having a rough time. I think an assessment by a psychiatrist would be important step if you haven't been through that already.
I am having trouble posting with my phone so I switched to my laptop. Thank you for your advice. I am having trouble finding a psychiatrist/psychologist that will accept health insurance. They all want out of pocket and then you submit the claims. I've done this before it's just a way to make more money and stick the mentally ill with the forms and headaches. What is wrong with these people??? Asking the mentally ill to handle this when some can't even get out of bed??
Sorry, I am griping too much. I just hate seeing it and going through it. System is broken.

When you get an assessment you can ask the psychiatrist for the name of a therapist\psychologist that they work with. That's what I did 5 years ago. After my assessment he gave me a list of 5 different therapists that he worked with. They got me right in. What you want is a therapist who does EMDR. That is a specialized treatment for PTSD.

So first get an assessment by a psychiatrist then work on things with a therapist\ psychologist.

Hope you find someone...sorry for the insurance problem. That is really frustrating I imagine. Getting approved for disability is usually a 2 year deal. Hope you can find your way through these things.

Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't even cover psychological evaluations. In my research, I found out that not many insurances do. So it's rough. I paid $3,000 for mine. I did find out a lot of valuable insight though and got pointed in the right direction as far as what kind of therapy to get and so on, but now I have no money for therapy lol. So it's rough for sure.

Luckily, a lot of us don't. For me, there are lots of stops and starts. Meaning, that it's really rough for a while, then you feel better, and then it's rough again, but it's always there in the background. We do get better, it just takes a shitton of effort and time.

Idk if you're spiritual or religious, prayer helps me a lot. If you aren't religious, you could try playing some calming music and try to relax, or try meditation. It really sounds like your nervous system is going haywire.

I am glad someone sees that. I feel like its going haywire. My husband sees it as well. It's debilitating. My next appt with my primary care is Tuesday, my husband is going with me to be an advocate. He feels like they aren't taking me seriously, which they aren't. I am hoping it helps with getting help.

First off Welcome @LisaZ !

So first get an assessment by a psychiatrist then work on things with a therapist\ psychologist.
This..... Psychiatrists diagnose, Psychologists treat...for the most part. Your psychologist may refine your diagnoses as they find things over time.
You can have them report to your doctor as well...if you want to.

Thank you for your advice. I would love to find one that takes health insurance. $500 for a visit is beyond my means. I won’t stop looking though.

I get the work thing - was laid off suddenly when PTSD symptoms flared up and got to a Psychiatrist before my benefits ended....

Check with your doctor and see if there is a local Mental Health Association too. They may have some advice or help.

Ugh, I feel you with this one. Hard. I'm just keying the ignition on the process myself and I haven't even got a doctor. I've been on a waiting list to see a pain specialist for 3 years. There's no family doctors in NS. I'm like, how the f*ck is a walk-in clinic doctor going to confirm I have life-disabling PTSD after meeting me a single time? So we're chasing the rabbits in circles and hoping and hoping. (Hopping!)
