Keto Diet Effects On Mood

When you say plenty of water how much is ‘plenty’ because consuming one gallon of water over the course of one day would likely be too much.
@spinningmytires - I was just responding to this. Because it isn't correct.
That a thing? To ask how much is too much?
Yeah, not really.

If it comes up in conversation with your doctor that you drink a lot of water ("a lot" being substantially more than the recommended 2 litres per day), they'll often run a battery of tests to make sure something isn't amiss.

Other than that? You're totally fine.
I drink when I’m thirsty and don’t when I’m not. Some days that’s 6 liters and some days it’s 2. Aren’t you supposed to drink when your body says it’s thirsty…period?
As long as you're drinking water regularly, you're usually good. In the west, the issue is overwhelmingly dehydration - 2 litres (8 glasses) over the course of the day is super important.

That measure gets super complicated super quick because of our diets. Juice drinkers will need less than 8 glasses, coffee drinkers will need more, etc etc. But typically, around that 8 glasses daily is super important for a whole host of health reasons (including our mental health!). And any restrictive diet (like keto) - staying sufficiently hydrated becomes critical real quick.

It's really hard to accidentally poison yourself with water. More than a litre per hour is not only very uncomfortable, and going to have you needing to pee every 20 minutes, but if you drink too much water too quickly you'll vomit it straight back up. Many of us have seen our dog do this, and humans do it too - sadly, some people do it deliberately when they want to purge.

If you find you're needing excessive amounts of water every day, or you're considering a restrictive diet - it's worth a conversation with GP about that:)

in response to this post, I’d say for some people the keto diet can cause near insanity. I walked in on my mom yelling at the Italian greyhound and trying to extract the steak the dog had swallowed from its throat, while she was on the keto diet. The iggy was so glad to see me. My mom was embarrassed and enraged and took some calming while I sequestered the iggy to the backyard for her own good.

I don’t understand why anyone would do this diet when if a diabetic is experiencing keto acidosis it’s a medical emergency.

I think you might be talking about diabetic keto-acidosis, a serious emergency condition where the body isn’t producing enough insulin. If this was your mother’s condition, it is no wonder her behavior and mood were adversely effected.

The topic being discussed in this thread is in regards to keto. These are related yet, not the same thing. The keto diet is designed to simply stabilize the insulin levels. I think, you’re talking about a lack of insulin.

I had no negative mood issues when beginning keto. The first 2 weeks were challenging because I was still fighting my hunger and old eating habits. Then too, I had then developed a temporary electrolyte unbalance which was soon corrected.

I didn’t realize they weren’t the same.

my mom however was on the keto diet when she tried to wrestle steak from the dogs throat. She said she didn’t know what came over her she just became enraged when she turned around to eat it and found the dog swallowing The last of it. So I stand by my answer of it can cause issues. Your brain NEEDS carbs to function, sugar which is what your body turns carbs into is a requirement of many of the bodies functions. i Also recommend you ease into it, as in cut back carbs then start the keto diet because for someone who is a carbaholic like my mom, going cold turkey was not a good plan And those of us around her suffered.

Do you think your mother might have been suffering from hypoglycemia? You mention that your mother is a carbaholic. This will create insulin and blood sugar problems.

If I had attempted to begin keto cold turkey, I suspect, my blood-sugar levels might have severely crashed. Before Keto, I would normally need to eat food every 5 hours to maintain my energy level. But on keto I can go 12 hours or more without eating and feel fine. I did suffer from hypoglycemia from about age 20 to my early 30s so, I do know what that’s like.

My blood-sugar level would sometimes severely drop just because I was under emotional stress. My sugar level once dropped so low that I vomited, my skin turned pale and cold. I couldn’t stand up. I was fearing I’d lose consciousness. By the time the doctor checked me I was feeling a bit better. My skin color returned. But even then, the doctor said my blood-sugar level tested as 40.

I did start keto very gradually. I had reduced my calorie intake for a few months prior before starting keto. Previously, I'd been grazing on small snacks throughout the day yet, struggling with terrible hunger pains and only losing a few pounds. So then, I started keto while cutting out all sugar, starches, wheat products, processed foods and began to then eat only twice per day.

I have heard that by the time your thirst urge kicks in, you are already dehydrated. I know I don’t drink enough water, so I’m constantly trying to get water into my body.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know I am the OP, but at this point I am currently not doing keto. It was very difficult for me to get enough electrolytes into my body and I was always deficient in magnesium, sodium, and potassium, and due to my medications, I already am working against some sort of side effect that depletes magnesium in my body. Keto was difficult, very difficult, even though my mood was indeed better. Let’s just say that I have been off keto for months now and still struggle with electrolyte deficiency. I have a bit of weight to lose, so I am trying to improve my diet overall. I have taken more of a “volume eating” approach which is pretty much finding lower calorie foods that can help keep you full. Think….veggies and lots of veggies. I then try to get protein into my body, and focus on healthier fats. And of course, I am avoiding junk foods. My body feels better even though I struggle mentally. I am taking a more gradual approach to weight loss as I want to get my body more focused on the right foods first, and then I’ll focus on calorie levels. I want to stay lower carb, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get down to keto carb levels again. When I was eating keto, I was sometimes eating too much bacon and other fatty foods so calorie reduction was still a struggle. I can’t say I had major hunger reduction as some do as I was still eating too much. Anyway, I just wanted to give an update, as the keto diet definitely isn’t for everyone, and I wanted to share my struggles. (I hated electrolytes in my water 🤮 and now I’m like “put more potassium <no salt> on those veggies!!!!” 😂)
In hot climates, or whilst physically active; or worst of all, both…no. If you’re thirsty? You’re already dehydrated. Which is extremely dangerous. You’re still dehydrated in cold climates if you’re thirsty, but you’ve got HOURS to fix it, instead of minutes.
I live in a cold climate, currently, so most days I only drink 5 or 6 liters. Days I’m working the line (100-115F degree heat, and constant movement) I’m back to desert/jungle rules and am pushing a liter an hour. 14 liters per shift, and then another 2-3 before/after work for just living. Everyone I work with does the same, or you won’t survive the heat. LMFAO, when any/all of us are also drinking (alcohol)?!? &/or are hungover?!? OMFG. In addition to drinking water like fishes… We also throw in serano peppers, lime, cucumber, mint, etc.
Where we vary is how we get our salts regulated. I’m a ginormous fan of British rehydration tablets, others use Gatorade/Powerade, some use foods, but we all up our salts (calcium, potassium, & regular ole salt-salt). Because we are sweating like whores in church. But most of us come from hot climates to begin with (I’m in the US, even this far north most kitchens are very Latin), and the rest get schooled very quickly on “how not to pass out & have seizures”.
The hot-climate water-rule? (And there are medical variations, this is just an “everyone except those who…”)
= Drink before you’re thirsty, & be peeing clear at least once an hour.
^^^That rule is one of those things that has been pounded in my whole life. Every year in grade school, and then often daily by coaches/parents, etc. Just hammered in. I felt bad in the military because during a heat study my urine was lemon coloured… but apparently, in our platoon (of 55), only 6 of us weren’t dangerously dehydrated. All of us from the desert/jungle/bayou.
Whether or not you go back on keto? I’ve fallen in love with these British rehydration tabs:
There are umpteen other brands, including chewables, and powders to add to drinks, but these have zero dairy, and I can knock them back with the rest of my pills… rather than having to suffer through whatever weird tasting super sweet (allergy soaked) stuff that’s every gas station and supermarket in the US.
