whilst you do the physical 'tap' (doesn't matter where)
Superjen, I hope you don't take offense, but I respectfully disagree with your professional psych on this, I think where you tap does matter.
Acupuncture meridian points are where the energy channels rise close to the surface of the skin and can be stimulated by touch or a needle. There are at least 400 known acupuncture meridian points that exist on the body. There are 12 main acupuncture meridian points, six of which are yin, and six that are yang and numerous minor ones, which form a network of energy channels throughout the body. Each meridian point is related to, and named after, an organ or function, the main 12 ones are: the lung, kidney, liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, large intestine, urinary bladder, san jiao (also know as the triple heater or warmer) and the pericardium.
It’s based off the mind/body connection. For example, when we get scared it’s usually more than just an emotional feeling, physical feelings and reactions are present too, maybe you feel something in your stomach or you start to sweat, hair stands up on end etc. There is a connection between the mind and the body, which the energy system is part of.
With EFT, the traumatic event or memory disrupts the energy system, which then creates negatives feelings, which if left in the energy system long enough can start to manifest into physical issues. When you tap on the negative, you release the stored negative energy that is causing the disruption which then brings the energy system back in balance, thus healing emotional and physical issues. Replacing the negative with the positive by tapping in the positive is an option, but is not necessary.
Because you’re tapping on the meridian points, which relate to organs and functions in the body, you are then able to use EFT for not only emotional issues, but physical issues as well. This is one of the largest differences between EFT therapy and EMDR therapy.
The meridian points you tap on with EFT should be one of each of the main 12 points so the body is fully balanced during each round of EFT.
Example of some of the common EFT points you tap on:
EB (Eyebrow Point) - This point is located on the dominant side at the beginning of the eyebrow, just up and over from the bridge of the nose. It is a Urinary Bladder Meridian Point, it releases trauma, hurt, sadness, restlessness, frustration, impatience, and dread, and allows peace and emotional healing.
SE (Side of Eye Point) - Located on the dominant side at the end of the eyebrow, this point falls on the boney protrusion at the leading edge of the temple. It is a Gall Bladder Meridian Point, it releases rage, anger, resentment, fear of change and muddled thinking and allows clarity and compassion
UE (Under Eye Point) - Located on the bone underneath the eye, directly under the pupil. It is a Stomach Meridian Point, it releases fear, anxiety, emptiness, worry, nervousness and disappointment and allows contentment, calmness, and feeling safe.
CB (Collar Bone Point) - Just below the knob of the collarbone and next to the depression below the Adam 's apple. It is a Kidney Meridian Point responsible for Adrenal Gland Function, it releases feeling stuck, indecision, worry, and general stress and allows ease in moving forward, confidence, and clarity.
