Hi all,

my previous therapist has closed her practice and she was specialised in EMDR and SCHEMA therapy.
I had a meeting with a new therapist who instead is specialised in affectphobia, NET (narrative exposure therapy), psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Did any of you try both: EMDR and NET? What did work better and why? Of course we are all different but I would like to hear some people experience.

Thank you in advanced for sharing your experience!

i'm currently doing net. i've no experence with emdr as i was told that i am not a candidate for it. i find the prosaic language of net not very useful. but my therepist is good about structureing the different parts of it in more clinical language that i respond better to.

the logical processing aspect is very useful. often times of what does come of trauma processing is that it makes it hard of knowing what specefic memories are the key stone memories and what is just background. so being able of constructing the entire history of things and then going through each part of it.

and then employing the cbt and exposure tools after having the framework. my therapist is also trained in fornet and those influences are also very helpful to me which not that that is something i am currently doing (to my knowledge) but that she has the background of being able to under stand the things i am talking of.

she will structure specefic event oriented questions in terms of obtaining information explicitly which is often directive. not only just the indevidiaul lays out their own story but that the therepist will help you with being able to construct it logecally using the words that you are saying. and asking questions to narrow down the facts first. and then build each frame work from there.

and it is very helpful for me. because often i am not capable of doing. even though the memory is mine. because of my ability of linearly being able to understand what is happening is pretty poor. that having the information laid out in this style is very useful for me. and she will tell me what she wants me to do. instead of that it's just directed of me because then i would just not do any thing at all.

i think the heart of net is cbt/cpt so you probably have done some thing similar at some point if you have been with in the newer theraputic modaleties for a while. i would encourage you to give it a try but to be pared that you will go through a lot of shit.

i haven't actually met any one else that has done net! so i hope that you could share some of your experences as you have gone through this as well if you choose to persue it.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I see that EMDR is more popular and I had the feeling that NET is less common and you confirmed it. it's really nice to hear that you are doing it too! I will let you know later how it goes. I think my previous therapist was combining some NET with my EMDR treatment but I guess I will see with the new therapist if it's true.

I think is a big part of trauma treatment going through a lot of s**t! Eheh btw what is fornet?

NET and PE have been criticized for being too harsh, too 're-traumatizing'...but the more I look at things like EMDR that are based on the 'target' concept, I find that they are (perhaps) just variations on the basic principles of exposure therapy. It seems to me that the difference is only in whether one is working from the inner experience of the trauma, or the outward facts of the trauma. But fundamentally - you're taking yourself through the events, repeatedly, until they seem to break apart into properly-stored pieces of the past.

Experientially - it seems to me that EMDR leaves more room for an emotional catharsis, while NET requires a sort of rigorous dedication to pushing through the pain of the narrative in order to get to the point where it's no longer painful. So there's not so much a sense of 'release' - there's an awareness of the absence of a painful response. EMDR lets you feel like you did something, you purged something.

It also seems to me that not everyone is capable of navigating EMDR without undergoing serious dissociation and decompensating as a result. NET is something that anyone can do.

BUT - if you've been living with a trauma narrative that is old enough to have embedded itself into your entire self-concept....it may be too easy to cheat at narrative exposure - EMDR will be able to catch you off guard, and get you into the bad shit more effectively.

Thanks Joeylittle! You gave me so many useful information.
