Great Holiday, But It Could Only Happen To Us

Hubby and I got back yesterday from a short camping trip, first holiday in 5 years, it was brilliant, just did not expect it to be so eventful. :roflmao:

We went last Sunday morning for a 5 night stay to a holiday camp we had been to years ago with a friend for a few nights, so decided to go on our own this time.

We knew it would be quiet-ish, because the kids were still at school, just did not realise we would be the only silly buggers in a tent. So quiet we could easy find our tent in the dark :roflmao:

The week was planned before we went so we did not have to sit and decide each day what we would do. Meals had been planned, some cooked on our camping stove some eaten out.

Monday off to Bridlington and Flamborough Head.
Tuesday off to Scarborough and North Landing.
Wednesday to Bempton cliffs Nature Reserve and South Landing.
Thursday to Burton Agnes Hall and Gardens.
Friday to Whitby on our way home.

Or so we planned.

Monday and Tuesday went as planned with meals and days out. the nights had not been too bad weather wise, though it was a bit breezy when we put our tent up. Wednesday morning was to drizzly and damp to cook, so we decided to go to the camp site cafe and have a full cooked breakfast.

This is where things got eventful

Because the drizzle was heavy, we decided to drive down to the cafe for breakfast. Unfortunately our car's engine cut out on the way down, we had no idea why and could not get it started, so we had to push it out of the way and leave it for the time being. we decided to have breakfast first, then call the break down service.

When he arrived it was still wet and drizzly, but he did his best to sort our car for us. It was the fuel pump that had packed in, he could not fix it for us, so we had to decide what to do. Did we go home there and then by recovery truck, or did we stay and they would pick us up on Friday to take us home.

We decided to stay and they would come for us at noon on friday.

The sun came out, so we went for a walk to Thornwick bay cliffs, it was a wonderful walk, sunny and stunning views of the cliffs. Then out for a meal in the pub down the road that night.

Thursday we went back to Bridlington we were going by bus, but missed it so we went by Taxi and came back on the bus. It was a beautiful sunny day and we never expected the sea mist that came down around 5pm, it was thick and damp, the kind that get through to your skin.

Thursday night turned from bad to worse, the heavens opened, we had thunder and lightening, and by now we were not looking forward to packing up, but thankfully one of the camp site workmen was coming in a van to help us get everything to the car. This should have made it easier. Ha I was joking wasn't I.

Friday morning, it was still pouring it down, and had a wind too, which did not help, though at this point we were still laughing. Not for much longer though.

We had to go for breakfast in the camp site cafe, {they were stunning}, but had to walk through the pouring rain, with no waterproofs and no umbrella. Yea I know stupid to forget them.

By the time we got there, because of the cold, damp and rain, hubby's back was killing him, so I dosed him with pain killers, hoping it would subside by the time we had eaten. Not a chance, which meant I had to finish packing up and take the tent down in the wind and rain.

I went and bought an umbrella from the shop, I needed a new one anyway, and set of back to the tent to pack up. By this time I honestly could have cried.

Lucky for me the guy who was going to take our gear down to the car, turned up early, and very kindly helped my take the tent down. He also lent me a waterproof jacket as the rain got heavier and windier just as we took the pegs out. I was not spending time tying all the guy ropes up and folding it, so each piece got stuffed into a bin liner, to be put back up and sorted at home.

By this time it was 11.15 and the recovery truck was not due until 12, so I could go back for hubby, who I had left in the cafe and have a hot drink before we had to go back to the car.

The truck arrived on time and had wonderful heaters on board, oh I was so grateful for those.

We made good time coming home, but the rain had been so bad overnight and that morning, the road we would have taken was flooded and closed.

our cat was pleased to see us and has not been for from us since yesterday.

Apart from all that we did have a good time, we did enjoy getting away, had some great meals, and we did get some sun.

Photos will be posted underneath. :D

Who would have thought that a few days away would be so eventful. But it's things like that that keep the memories of the trip alive, and something to talk and laugh about in years to come.

Good for you, for sticking with the camping in the rain. I'd have given up and booked into a B&B!! But I'm a whimp ;)

I'm pleased you had a good time, despite all the ups and downs.

((((((Amethist))))))

I'm so glad you are both home safe. You really did have an adventure didn't you! Our fuel pump went last week and we have just had to get it replaced - not cheap!

Your photos are lovely. I want to visit Bempton cliffs to watch the sea birds but not if the weather is bad, might get blown over the edge.

I love the Yorkshire coast, so rugged, and especially Whitby. I'm glad you managed to have a good walk and a few good days out.

Send a hug to H from Steve and I.

{Note to self - buy a brolly for York trip.}

Up date on the petrol pump.

It is fine it was not broken after all, and I did suggest that it could be damp because of where we were parked, with wind and sideways rain, and the heavy sea mist that came over, but no one listened to me.

Car has been parked in the drive since Friday, had chance to dry out and now with a new fuse it is fine.

So all you male mechanics out there who think you know all about cars, you dont. All it needed was a spray of damp start and a new fuse and it would have been fine, but they took no notice of me.

They will next time.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:p:tup: Amethist, it takes a woman. I am so glad you got away. You are brave to have that kind of adventure. You got some gorgous pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. I am so happy you got away at last. I would have gone to a hotel.;) I am not an adventuress like you. I am glad your car problems are all sorted out.

Isn't it interesting that it only takes one time like this to get your point across? Very jeoulous in a good way. I love vacations. It is always nice to come home. Welcome back you were missed.
