Has anyone been assaulted in a medical setting? I was sexually assaulted in a psychiatric hospital. Had anyone had a similar experience? Does anyone struggle to feel safe in that environment?

Welcome to the forum. I haven't had this experience, but hopefully someone else who has been through something similar will respond soon.

This happened to someone I care about, so I am aware that it happens. She was raped by a fellow patient, a boy. She let him into her room. She said it was like a date rape but not on a date, obviously.

No but I went to one of those schools that use "time out" rooms" until the middle of grade 6. I've been groped and actually beaten by teachers before. Sometimes it would just be over me dropping the f bomb. Quite the reaction for petty shit.

Also My mom was an LPN before I was born. She told me that she's had to report a few of her colleagues for sexual abuse and harassment on patients.

You're bold for opening up about this. More people need to talk about institutional abuse. You're not alone.

I was tortured in a psych ward after being back from deployment & switching places.

Things still blur, about those two things. They're still one thing in my head.

Yes, when I was a teenager I was forced to dance with a psych tech who rubbed his raging hardon on me until he came. When I resisted, he reminded me that I would be put in restraints & get a shot of thorozine in my ass. Those shots stung like hell! In those days, the techs did not have to be certified. They were hired off the street with no experience! Ahh, the 1960's! I got caught doing acid & was forced into a mental ward for admitting it!

I have not experienced anything like this but know that it happens, and am terrified of that environment. Not particularly of this happening, but for other reasons I won't go into here. I think hospitalizations can re-traumatize even without any assault. It can be like punishing and taking all rights away because of emotional weakness, drugs or alcohol use, or other reasons. Locked in, without rights, and the patient often has severe trust issues and is suppose to trust that those in authority are not going to abuse them as others have. Not ideal by any means.

I was not protected in a medical setting and that leaves more distrust. The medical staff were capable of taking preventative steps with very little effort, and failed.

I came across someone who tried that, and it was a severe attempt of attacking me that way, still suffering from that attempted attack. Still dizzy from thinking about how someone that can seem so trustworthy can wreck such havoc on innocent people.

Yeah, BTDT. Used to be Brown School, Inc. out of Texas somewhere that ws the HQ. They had "schools" in nearly every state. That was in the late 80's.

I suppose I can answer yes to this.

I had many operations when I was a child and teenager in the 1960s and 70s. Often I was treated with great care and compassion. At other times I was subjected to treatments and procedures that were so poorly thought through and badly implemented that I think it was abusive. It has certainly affected me all my life, so obviously something was wrong, even if it wasn't intentional.

It didn't help that my medical problem involved my genitals, which added an additional complexity both in terms of my experience of it and the need for 'dignity' (which was non existent).

I was also 'touched sexually' whilst being photographed in hospital by a consultant, who many years later was struck off for abusing boys, in exactly the same way he abused me.

I have been severely affected by these treatments and experiences.
