I still can’t shake off my nightmare from last night…

Hi everyone,

I feel… lost.

I still can’t shake off my nightmare from last night…

I had 3 nightmares, 2 of which I still can’t fully remember...

The 3rd nightmare, unfortunately, I fully remember.

My goal for this post is not to talk about what my nightmare included, but rather what advice other users would offer?

When I experience nightmares, I can’t shake them off and feel… awful the rest of the day.

- Rinsing off all the fight/flight chemicals/pheromones on my skin -and changing my clothes/sheets- is my first step.

- Second, if I’m still up, is to “pick an emotion”… via music, books, movies/tv, exercise, whatever I happen to feel like in the moment. Something that engages my mind, and directs my emotions accordingly.

- If the first 2 don’t work? A little ‘better living through chemistry’. It’s super rare I get this far. Maybe 1:50.

I have the same thing happen to me. I try to play some feel good morning music. I’ll journal it and enjoy some good music. It may take some time, but it does work for me.

I need to take some time to acknowledge that I had an especially bad night and to reassure myself that there is no reason to think that it will happen again the next night. Usually, part of the reason it is taking longer than it would normally take me to recover is because I'm tense from worrying about the next time I go to sleep. I'll make sure I plan to do something relaxing before bed and pay extra attention to the process of getting ready for bed.
