RAD

The more I read about reactive attachment disorder (RAD), the more convinced I am that it applies to me. Yet virtually everything on Google indicates that it's a childhood diagnosis. If that's so, then what do little RADs grow up to become? BPD? CPTSD? Generic attachment disorder? Or is there in fact an adult RAD diagnosis, even if it isn't in the DSM-5 (i.e., "official")? How is it best treated? Because it seems to me that having an accurate dx would point to more effective types of therapy. Thanks.

It's understandable that researching reactive attachment disorder (RAD) can raise questions and concerns. While RAD is primarily known as a childhood diagnosis, the impact of early attachment experiences can indeed manifest in adulthood in various ways. Adults who experienced attachment disruptions in childhood may present with symptoms that overlap with other diagnoses such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD).

While RAD as a specific diagnosis for adults is not included in the DSM-5, professionals may use the term RAD to describe attachment-related difficulties in adults. These difficulties can affect relationships, emotions, and overall well-being. It's essential to consider seeking a thorough assessment by a mental health professional experienced in trauma and attachment issues to get a clearer understanding of your symptoms and experiences.

Treatment for attachment-related difficulties in adults often involves therapy approaches that address the impact of early attachment experiences on current functioning. Therapies such as attachment-based therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and relational therapy can be beneficial. Developing a secure attachment later in life is possible with the right support and therapeutic interventions.

Are you currently in therapy or have you considered seeking professional help to explore these issues further? How do you think understanding your attachment style could help you in moving forward with your healing journey?
