Sleep Paralysis and Accident. Is this normal for people with CPTSD?

New Here
Last night I had a nightmare so bad that I woke up unable to move and I wet myself, which is really really embarrassing because I’m an adult. This is the first time the latter has happened to me. As soon as I could move again, my brain blocked out the nightmare and I can’t remember what it was anymore. I am now taking a bubble bath and wondering what to do with my life.

Has anyone else had this happen? I’ve soaked the bed from sweating during a nightmare before, but never had this specifically happen.

hello gubmoo. welcome to the forum. sorry for what brings you here, but glad you are here.

yup, it has happened to me, though i am grateful to report it has been quite a few years. knock wood. i don't feel **cured** and still maintain a daily inventory to help me catch the symptoms early and prevent their escalation to another round of that horror. may i never **go there** again.

i believe the rumor that this tick is normal for most of the human species and not restricted to nightmares. full dream recall is rare in humans. whatever the tones of the dream. joyful dreams are as hard to hold on to as hellish dreams. one of the tools i used to break the nightmare cycle was a dream journal. during the years of dream journal therapy, i kept my journal next to my bed so that i could record the dream before my feet hit the floor. even then, the dreams were often hard to recall. most dreams fade fast. regardless of content.

you are not alone gubmoo. gentle empathy on the horror. steadying support while you find your way out.
welcome aboard.

So glad I've read this tonight. A few days ago I was woken up in the middle of the night feeling startled and suddenly realising I was wetting myself. I managed to stop, jump up and into the bathroom to clean up, but oh my days the embarrassment is real!
I remember dreaming I was in the bathroom, and feeling stressed/upset, but zero recollection of anything else! Apart from the annoyance of extra laundry, i was most upset by not understanding why this happened, as like you, I've never experienced this before. It has been a pretty rough time lately with a family bereavement (bereavement and hospitals are huge triggers for me), so sleep has been difficult, so I'm hoping that this was just another trauma reaction and nothing more. Damm annoying though eh!

i know that effect from a nightmare only too well. As with you, severe stress wakes up the worst in my mind.
I'm nigh on 70 now, and over 35 years there are still one or two nightmares that pin me down.
Yet, I console myself with the knowledge that not every nightmare is REALLY horrible and over time some have even evolved into a feel good factor.
