Other What can fall under trauma?

I have a lifelong disease that threatened my life back in 1990. It caused an infection in my heart called endo-carditis. It caused another heart infection in 1992. I have flair-ups of this thing every year or two. When it causes any pain in my heart, I get scared. Then there are the times I have trouble breathing. The heart beating healthily and the lungs working properly are two very important parts of LIFE. One cannot live without these actions going on in the body.

The disease went undiagnosed for many years before 1990. We are not sure exactly, but it appears to be from 1985 on that I have had it. It is called Lyme Disease and is gotten from a tick bite. It affects one's whole system and never goes away completely. For instance, my Infectious Disease Specialist told me NEVER donate blood.

Then again, I have been threatened with sexual assault, actually experienced it in another time and was the victim of childhood sexual assault many times.

Trauma is regarded differently My some professionals. In this place the most rigid definition is defined and so I think that’s what has to count in THIS venue. However in some other venues you will different opinion.

Your therapist is best to guide you IMO. Certainly better than us; we cannot ever know your details intimately and you cannot put stock in our answers as we are anonymous.

Trauma that causes PTSD has a fairly strict definition and is not set by anybody here at the forum.

In the DSM it does. Some challenge that. Just like cPTSD isn’t in the DSM yet is considered ‘real’ my many mental health professionals.

The great thing about science is it is there and evolves with understanding and the DSM by virtue of being an American publication and what is referred to here is not universally regarded as biblical in its perfection.

My point is HERE it is. So that’s the guideline for here. I Don’t argue that.

Not all trauma causes PTSD. What does is what we are discussing because that's what this forum is about. That is set by the DSM and ICD. So, we are not defining trauma here. We are defining trauma that can cause PTSD.

CPTSD is in the ICD thus real. It is an international manual. Just because it is not in the DSM yet doesn't mean it's not real. But, even the ICD criteria of PTSD has been brought up. Again, trauma that causes PTSD. That is not the defintion of trauma. That is only the defintion of trauma that causes the changes in the brain that can (but doesn't always) cause PTSD.

I am agreeing to disagree.

As I said; my stance is, it’s the stance taken HERE thus I accept it here. It’s still not true to suggest there is no disagreement about this or that these tomes are infallible and unchanging.

As I said, I do not take stance with how it’s used here but it is disingenuous to not accept other mental health professionals disagree.

I am not one, and so far as I have proof most people here are not. I have had much help in my time away from here from people who take opposing stance. I’m not challenging anyone else’s boundaries. Merely saying to that person that if they do not meet those requirements for here , it does not mean their therapist or other professionals are wrong.

Other viewpoints can coexist without challenging each of us. Unless we plan to stay fixed in our damaged state.

If admin choose to ban me for holding this opinion which I have voiced courteously to help someone who might not get help here, I feel I can live with that.

To clarify I am typing with no anger or antagonistic intent.
