Why Are People Consumed By Politics?

My tech breaks and limiting setting you suggested are working thank you.
Something that works amaaaazingly in my own life is something I’ve nicknamed “The Heidi Cure”. (When she goes from being sick in the city, to thriving being active/healthy in the mountains; good food, exercise, clean air, people who care).

If there’s anything ACTUALLY catastrophic happening? Other people will dial me in, and I have enough self confidence to deal with whatever/whenever. Stressing about “what if?!?” is a waste of resources.

It’s NOT a PTSD-Cure. It IS a tremendous stress management / life improvement tool.

And it largely stems from my time overseas where I was very much dealing with real things… and the record screeching, returning to first world stuff, where people are all stressed out about imaginary stuff; and first not grokking what everyone was on about, and then the impulse to know/understand/get in front of what everyone else was freaking out about. >.< NOPE! “When in danger, or in doubt? Run in circles, scream & shout!”… just isn’t me. It’s not how I operate. But the hype of others creates a reeeeeal disconnect/cognitive dissonance. Like people putting butter on burns, freaking out over a low grade fever, and other “Don’t DO that!” frustrations? Spend enough time around anxiety-and-stupidity & it creeps in. Starts making the world gritty/wrong feeling. So? Taking a step back from stupid, and just doing my own thing? Resets the internal balance.

This. When there actually is a catastrophic event, you can’t escape knowing about it even if you try. They may come with very short notice, but when they arrive, some way, some how, you will be clued in.

I know some pretty tuned-out hermitty weirdos, and I haven’t met a single person who didn’t about covid!

This sounds illogical but this year's election. The media has the ability to show events that are not real aka a riot run on banks the president being hospitalized.
Logic became irrelevant in this issue a long time ago, yeah?! Here in ptsd-land, with our overactive amygdalas, it’s all about emotions! And Fear is right at the tippy top of things that will set us off.

So give yourself a logic pass!

Any of the things you’re worried about? You will find out, pretty damn fast, even if you try and hide from the news. Checking the phone again, watching that one last YouTube video, reading that one more Reddit forum, isn’t going to help you be more ready.

So, having dealt with that worst-case scenario, what do you do with the life that’s actually in front of you, right now? The one that is actually full of opportunity, and beauty, and just one short run that you don’t get a second pass at?

Screens these days are something else. Your technology, hubby’s technology, makes money from keeping you transfixed. Keeping your attention is, actually, the only way that any media can make any money from you. And right now? It’s absolutely nailing it!

So yeah, that tech-break is probably the single most effective thing you can do to get in front of this. Because the most likely outcome, is that it won’t be a catastrophe. And while you watch that screen, and worry about that catastrophe, the amazing, beautiful world is passing you by.

What is the most beautiful thing outside your front door?
Are sunrises or sunsets better where you are? What is your favourite way to spend the afternoon?
Did you do that today?

To go along with what Sideways and Friday have said, I wonder if you can do some reframing. I’m familiar with the rough area you live and I think it’s a great area to be safe, relatively isolated, and build sustainable living. Like I don’t see where people would come invading your area for the simple fact that it’s so rural. Any rioting or looting or whatever it is your husband is afraid of is going to stick largely to the cities.

But, you’re in a fantastic area to really build up your home for sustainable living. And that’s the ultimate goal right? To survive any potential collapse? If you’re self sufficient, you don’t *have* to put stock in what the media says the government is doing.

So, if I were you, I’d focus on gardening, raising animals, learning skills like canning, sewing, etc. Create enough confidence in yourself and your abilities that you no longer care what the idiots on Capitol Hill are doing.

It has snowed and rained here making my
. usual daily walks not doable. But yes it is beautiful here. I do exactly what you say. Just to the west of our rv park is a field and view of part of NM mountain range, I walk there with my tablet playing now we are free from gladiator. I got a letter on 1/3 stating my chapter 13 bankruptcy is complete. This was from medical expenses 2014 bacterial meningitis of my brain. This illness was directly related to trying to care for my first hhusband. He was fond of the book the first immortal and said I want to come back to walk the green grass again, I am the one doing that. Yes I almost died back in May 2014. Have a seizure risk from the illness, I have been seizure free all this time. My husband is waiting on something that will probably never occur. But I created my future. And I will keep doing so. Not by waiting for doomsday but seizing life.
