@Chava I don't think you lacked resilience, maybe just didn't know the skills at the time to deal with what you were going through. I agree with you that people can process traumas with the right support system with much greater outcome.
@theshadowoftheliving that is really interesting as I have done the opposite. I think I became more skilled at leaving my body so in effect the later trauma didn't happen to me.
@falling_wave you are right, in my case at least that there was no huge leap from happy and innocent to complete terror. More of a here we go again.
I could also be in denial over the impact that its had and am ignoring the smaller effects.
@FridayJones this is a very good point that had I had...
@GWhizz I actually don't have a therapist I'm with the NHS and my doctor is completely useless. Unfortunately I can't afford to see anyone privately.
Physically it was more violent and was purposely humiliating this is why I see it as a bigger trauma in terms of what was actually happening at...
@RussH absolutely I think my question could have been better worded to ask why we go on/ or not to develop PTSD after another trauma. What changes in us that stops it occurring in a different but similar situation even if the way we respond is seemingly the same. I suppose the obvious answer is...
@stenni its fascinating how each brain works so differently from the next persons. Maybe on a neurological level we react differently to each of our traumas so we need to address them individually instead of as a collective.
.
@Go Hungry I think that realistic, litteral approach is something a lot of us do without even realising, its simply self preservation.
I get you about the laughing at bad situations. Its not that I think bad thing are funny but sometimes it comes as an aumatic respoonse along with "Again...
@theshadowoftheliving I've just looked that up quickly, and its very interesting I will have to look further into it. I must admit I've been in denial for a long time over my dissociation so don't know much about it.
Are you saying that you didnt dissociate during your adult traumas? Sorry if...
'after dealing with the lion, dealing with a rabid dog wasn't so scary'
@desiderata310 I really like that analogy. I suppose that even if you deal with more than one lion in your time you its never as scary as the first.
@stenni I know my partner sometimes looks at me like I'm crazy for talking about something that would be utterly life changing for them the same way I talk about doing the chores. Maybe at a certain point we have just become so desensitised to trauma that it stops having an effect.
Ok so I've been mulling over this since i woke this morning. And I've wondered in a general manner as to why in the case of multiple trauma only some things cause PTSD.
For me the things that have caused my PTSD have been sexual abuse as a child by a family member and a rape and sexual assault...
Hi @monie1236 I'm sorry for the what you have experienced, it sounds as though you have found a wonderful husband and that he is a great support to you.
The trouble I have with trouble I have with trusting and listening to myself is that I would be screaming at every father/ grandfather I see...
