Hi, everyone. My name is Jen, I'm 23 years old and I am currently dating someone with PTSD. His name is JD, we've been together for 5 months now, and while the majority of that time has been happy, we have had more than our fair share of obstacles. He is a Veteran, on disability for his PTSD. He did not have a happy childhood, and has had a string of failed relationships (his first wife left him during his first deployment, his last g/f was a drug addict and cheated on him constantly). He takes medication, and he usually does see a therapist once a month, but he hasn't been able to since heading down for FL to attend Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. I suffer from severe depression, it runs in my family, I also did not have the best childhood, and I've also suffered from a string of failed relationships. I am on medication for my depression. Because of his issues, he's detached and emotionless. Because of my issues, I'm kind of needy and clingy (tho I hate those words) and I wear my heart on my sleeve.
So you take one case of PTSD, two sets of bad depression, two different sets of symptoms from the depression, and 8 hours of distance between the two people...and you have one rather difficult relationship.
Even though the odds are stacked up against us, I think we make each other very happy. We have a great time when we're together, we have similar interests, we have the same sense of humor, we're both smart and can have intelligent conversations, we support each other, we're proud of each other, and we care for each other very deeply.
I think things will get better now that I've discovered this website. I knew he had PTSD, but I hadn't ever really thought about it until yesterday he said something that really opened my eyes. I started doing research, and I am glad I found this website. I think this is going to be a very good resource for me, and it will help improve our relationship :)
