I think that people with structural dissociation can have parts that feel certain pains -- or sometimes feel certain parts of the body. When that "part" is not active, the part and pain might not be in one's daily-life consciousness. These other parts are still sort of aware, though, from what I...
:D:(:inpain::whistling:
If there wasn't much response from adults when we were kids and had pain, or if an abuser even got pleasure from our expressions of pain, we'd have pretty strong motivations not to feel the pain, if at all possible...
I actually had a shoulder problem looked a little...
I wonder about this too, being 51... Apparently changes in hormones can let joints, tendons etc. get inflamed more easily, so that could be part of the issue.
However, I also have been finding that various deep muscles haven't been giving feedback, on my left side. I only noticed this when a...
@shimmerz -- maybe he realized he was being an unthinking jerk... you didn't deserve that unempathic treatment -- but actual addicts don't either; I don't think they are helped by that attitude but I bet it's a defense that doctors etc. use.
I am very glad you are getting better treatment...
Hi @Hope4Now -- I think that I also go between the modes you describe below except for the 4th one... I sometimes feel very incapable but it's sort of vaguer than you describe, like I'm not going to be able to cope with anything. I tend to then feel unsafe with that and bounce out of it, I...
Hmmm, I do think I like "not normal". I could settle on that one. All the other conditions that Solara mentioned can fit there too, so it's not being superiorist.
:geek::p
I don't think that wishing to focus on something being caused by external forces is elitist though... why compare ptsd...
I have been preferring "injury" but after reading various posts, I now feel that neither injury nor illness fits! :-)
However illness, to me, has either a pathogen or genetic internal cause... so I still feel that the external focus of the word "injury" fits better, and I prefer that the focus...
I wonder if different wording might work better with some doctors, if they are the type thinking everyone is a drug-seeking addict... like "I often block out if I'm feeling pain"... or "I got pretty used to ignoring pain a while back, and don't notice my body problems when it might be...
Hi @Chava -- that is great that you managed and that your cat is fluffy and lumpy. Your arm definitely deserves to hold a good cat like that, and lots of future good treatment too.
With my muscles etc. that went from not even "being there" in my sense of my body space to itchy to trembling...
@Chava -- you are totally not pathetic. Pain disordered makes lots of sense.
I like the wrapping idea. Please let me know if it is helping the arm. I forgot to mention; fuzzy things seem appreciated by my "left part" and everyday self (i.e. I like fuzzy things and probably have since I was...
Hi @Valentino ... interesting! I don't think I agree that "comfort" is just a distraction, though, and the goal is to feel the raw memories in the absence of good support and comfort! For a lot of folks, who never got comforted through feelings from the traumatic incidents causing all the...
Hi @Chava . I agree with Scout; your T should be willing to talk about things that help you budget! Basic and reasonable to do so.
Re. your hand and the shaking... do you think that maybe an "EP" is more connected to this part of your body, but kinda dissociated off of your everyday...
hi I did find that Seroquel helped me sleep during a really bad period years ago. It was a relief that something would... lack of sleep to that extent was really terrible. Bit zombied but could function until things improved.
@anthony have you read the stuff in Body Keeps the Score about CBT not being helpful for a lot of folks with dissociative issues? If our lower brains switch off our ability to use higher cognitive skills on issues ... even if cognitive distortions are present I suspect future research is going...
Curious... How long has it taken folk to figure out their AP and EP parts? @Eleanor it sounds like you have a detailed understanding of this now which must be very helpful! I only started reading about these in the last 1 to 2 years. I saw some articles dated mid 2000s.
A lot of people who have PTSD from military situations apparently also had trauma in childhood (a risk factor for development of PTSD after adult trauma even if they weren't "obviously symptomatic" after the childhood experiences)... I would imagine governments sometimes try to use to evade...
Treadmill, lots of stretching, then unfortunately snow shoveling so that the furnace outlet doesn't get buried!
Can someone who is someplace warm please send some here?
Treadmill at gym while watching silly science fiction; then a bit of weight machines, then lots of stretches. There is so much snow outside -- impossible to walk far.
Hi @Hope4Now - this is really tricky for me as my normal everyday part is a lot more connected to the moment and is the "me" that generally talks to people normally. Another part is more emotional responses that sort of bubble up after the fact, seems out of nowhere but has a different "tone" to...
Hello @Solara -- "reconciliation" is not really reconciliation with abusers -- those family members who are pushing you to "reconcile" really want you to shut up about the abuse and its effects upon you, and stop disturbing their denial... It is really difficult to separate from a family unit as...
There are probably whole books written on these ethical issues, recombinations of these issues are probably relevant in many medical situations.
Informed consent is definitely important! I bet it gets really tricky though... therapists might often not really know what the client's issues are...
@Kaia -- there are a couple of different issues here, from my perspective at the moment.
One is that yes, retraumatization itself is bad if that's actually what is going on -- which could be the case if no effective therapy is being used for the person, *and* additional pain/symptoms/etc. are...
Hi Chava, I have had a few short periods where I thought I was aware that some fairly chronic muscle issues were directly connected to old emotions... then the awareness vanished again though. I have no idea if what might be going on with me, is at all similar to what is causing your pain...
I...
I am finding this thread incredibly helpful, thanks so much for all the insight here.
My adult coping seems to be really good, but has also had the benefit of many years of therapy, unfortunately therapy that did not include anything about ANPs and EPs, so I had a lot of trouble explaining some...
