Just saw this thread. I'm gonna take a shot here.
I see a pretty clear indication that you (JJ) grew-up in a shame-based household. Your parents had a strict image of what you should be as their child, and when you veered from that image, you were shamed for it. There may never have been any...
I think there's a lot of truth to this. We get "trained" for this, to the point that it becomes easier than treating ourselves well. Our entire reward/punishment system gets tangled-up, it seems. ;)
I know I have this problem as well. "Delegation" was a bad word in my vocabulary. "Real" men don't other people to do their work for them -- they do it all themselves. Of course, this is impossible.
But, then, even if I was OK to delegate, I'd have the whole social issue of having to trust...
I think that different people/experts have suggested both models for the "inner child". Some suggest that it's a conceptual way to regain the innocence and playfulness of childhood for an adult who's life has become stale. This is a fine concept for someone who didn't suffer trauma as a child...
I don't think all ADHD is caused by having an NPD parent. It does seem, though, that there's a correlation for many who do have ADHD, especially with regard to the dissociation aspect.
My son has raging ADHD, but he doesn't "zone-out", whereas I do. (Of course, I'm hoping that my son has no...
Looking at pictures of myself as a child makes me sad and angry. Early pictures show the childhood that "could have been"; later childhood pictures show the effects of the emotional wear and tear on me. I've never been able to use these to gain empathy for myself -- there's too much else going...
I think it's possible and, also, we probably have better diagnosing now, especially since more people now seek mental health care, which used to be a big stigma.
I think that, as western society becomes more anti-social and addicted to gadgets and social media, the number of those with NPD will...
Interesting that the program you went through actually had you separate the parts out. But, actually, this makes sense -- hard to work with something that you can't definitively identify. And, as I think about it, I think my experience has been about the same -- trying to identify things...
@Privateer,
This would mean that your wife's inner child is only temporarily inner? ;) Congratulations, by the way!
No one would EVER suggest the things you've been through didn't happen to you. That would not only be beyond rude, but reality-challenged.
The "inner child" concept occurs...
@LhasaLover, thanks for your comments! Stimulants can definitely drive-up anxiety; strangely, in some, it lowers it because it also improves mood. It's all a big soup -- all the right ingredients need to be there, in the right amounts. :)
Thanks, Abstract! Very interesting. Never learned this before. :)
I also found it a little funny as an analogy: I am a computer systems architect, and we use almost all of the same terminology to model computer systems and software applications -- structure, behavior, transactions, etc. I...
I wish I had something useful to say, wish I understood more. If you have a therapist, it might be a good idea to give him/her a call, if this is situation is bad enough.
As far as not telling anyone, if you can, it might be good to at least tell your therapist. One thing I've felt...
I can see that "snapshot" could imply visual memory only, but I do realize that the "frozen state" is the collection of all sensory input from an event or series of events.
I've never even gone as far as specifically creating different systems or states, and I do not have distinct separate personalities. However, in my recent experience, it appears I do have individual, unique "emotional personalities" -- exactly as Abstract described these.
Does this mean the first instance where a new personality is created must be prior to age 5? Otherwise, how does someone develop alters that exist at later ages?
This explains a whole lot to me. This is what I've been experiencing lately, and what my therapist has been hinting at. Guess I...
I know this is a dormant thread, but I am compelled to comment anyway. :)
I mean, how incredibly wrong is it for someone, already suffering from trauma and looking for help, to get terrorized by the person who's supposed to be providing the help? And, as others have indicated, this is not so...
This was a hard-fought battle for me, about 4 years ago. Related to what Movin'On posted, a therapist once gave me the following definition of "forgiveness": it's a gift you give to yourself.
Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting, and it doesn't mean all is now well between you and those who...
My turn:
1) At what age did your trauma begin?
Birth
2) At what age were you diagnosed with ADD/ADHD?
39, but it has affected me all of my life.
3) How would you rate your average level of dissociation, on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being mild day-dreaming and 10 being Dissociative Identity...
‘91 Girl and I have collaborated on putting together the above poll, to examine the following:
- The correlation between ADD/ADHD among those with PTSD, and having family-of-origin caregivers with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD -- see below for a description)
- The correlation between...
@therapybankrupt
Thank you! It has done the same for me. Good luck on your journey as well!
I am waiting to get to this point. But, at least, I can sort of see a point in time where I might actually make it there. 6 months ago, this was not true.
