Other I've been paying for the sins of other men all my life

Your anger is palpable. And, with a history of abuse, that’s often a massive achievement in the healing journey all by itself (like, I’m finally angry!!). We have a lot to be angry about. Anger is a big, powerful emotion. Like all emotions, it tends to explode all around us, taking no...

Simple bed time routine to promote sleep when you're more triggered - ideas please

Simple isn’t my strong suit when it comes to sleep hygiene. I have a day-long sleep hygiene routine. I have some parasomnias which I need to manage in order to get a good sleep, and I need to get good sleep in order to keep myself out of mental health crisis!! Cardio. At least 20 minutes...

Readers thread: what or who are you reading right now?

I’ve cracked open A Gentleman In Moscow on the assurance that it was brilliantly written. Well, okay, yes - the writing style is very well done. But, call me a fuddy-duddy, but…I do like a plot. And beyond a few opening pages given over to explaining why this dude is living in a hotel, I’m...

    Other Tired of street harassment

I’ve lived in places that made me feel unsafe every time I stepped out the door. I moved. Not always an easy option. And very few people on the earth are financed sufficiently that they can pull it off quickly. But feeling safe where you live is so important when you have ptsd on board.

    Chat, check-in, and hang out

I seem to recall we’re in the same state. The weather here has been crazy - they seem to be coming up with new ways to categorise giant hailstones on the strength of it. Just devastating to so many communities. The damage hail can do is mind blowing, and some of the towns in our region got hit...

What has trauma taught you about death?

This sounds like a very helpful belief for your brain to have, given the type of situation you immerse yourself in with your volunteering. Which is not to say you’re wrong, just that it makes sense to me that this is where your head currently is, and potentially needs to be, in order to cope. I...

Relationship Mid-trigger breakup - now what?

If you really respected his boundaries, you wouldn’t have done this: He’s asked you to leave him alone. And you still aren’t doing that. You are ignoring the 1 thing he has consistently told you he wants. Respect what he’s asked for. Leave him alone. Tbh - you’d be coming across as...

    Trauma in volunteer work

I’m similar. Volunteering is important in my life for a heap of reasons. Among those reasons, are the role it’s played, and continues to play, in my recovery. There’s so many different ways to volunteer. There’s a lot of roles where trauma comes up over and over again. But there’s also a tonne...

Sufferer Learning to Integrate, not Just Survive

Welcome to the forum - sorry you have reason to be here, but glad you found us😊 I have DID, and personally the idea integrating makes my toes curl! But I can definitely relate to needing to step in before things spiral, and the amazing ways being in nature can help with that!

Would cutting off my family be realistic?

Are there some workable boundaries you can implement that you can sustain over time with your current situation?

OSDD-1A&B - Do I have OCD or do my alters? New here any insight is appreciated!

Have you done assessments like the MMPI? Can be really helpful if you’re trying to get to know who you are, once you have stripped away the BS your abuser had you convinced about.

Would cutting off my family be realistic?

Doesn’t sound like ‘cutting off’ so much as giving them the silent treatment when it suits you. If that helps you survive, or prevent further abuse? Great. Doesn’t sound like a path to healing, though.

    Agrophobia

Yeah, I’ve been there. Got to the point where, functionally, I was apartment-bound for a long time. Didn’t live in a crash-hot area at the time either, which meant that when I did manage to venture out, it often didn’t go well! The problem is that the more you don’t, the worse the fear gets...

OSDD-1A&B - Do I have OCD or do my alters? New here any insight is appreciated!

Rumination and maladaptive daydreaming. Do you need to keep adding labels? Is that helpful? As someone with DID, definitely some of my parts have dysfunctions that I don’t typically display. But like @Rose White said - they’re all me. No way is my T going to ‘diagnose’ one of my parts. That...

Poll Should the APA include the CPTSD DX in the DSM?

Yup. And distinguishing it without different evidence-based treatment? Just adds a layer of stigma that hasn’t helped in other forms of mental illness with poor treatment prognosis (specifically when we’re talking about the DSM). Complex ptsd would become ‘the ptsd that can’t treated’, and the...

Poll Should the APA include the CPTSD DX in the DSM?

Not disagreeing with any of your points - just the conclusion you reach with them: I’m not sure the stardardised framework (for example, the ICD’s) is right - it’s just what the WHO has identified as roughly what it seems to mean when people get diagnosed with complex ptsd (a reflection of...

Poll Should the APA include the CPTSD DX in the DSM?

This topic is really interesting to me. This post is me working through some of my thoughts on the matter than some kind of criticism of the question, or intent of the post! I’m probably currently erring on the side of van der Kolk, that it could be useful to include a Developmental PTSD...
