I found that I needed to remind myself throughout the series how young Katniss was really supposed to be. She'd been through a lifetime of traumatic events, but was still very young. But I remind myself that really, that's not all that unrealistic. Most of the soldiers we've sent to the sandbox...
Hi, Annabelle. I just saw this. Will send a message right now to one of our moderators so we can get you added to the group. We keep in tough with a private message that has us all on it, then we meet for chat on Wednesday evenings at 7. Have you been to the chat room yet?
I saw on another of...
I just finished the last book yesterday. Holy cow - couldn't put the darned thing down! I liked the section where they talked about resuming The Hunger Games, and Katniss' reaction to it. I was a bit surprised at the ending. Not so much who she chose to spend her life with, but where, and the...
I'm on the 3rd book, where they've just retrieved Peeta and have found his mind to be "hijacked". It's interesting how they explain the concept of memory, and how it can be altered.
Give it up, Nicolette. Once you're hooked, its all over! :)
I'm at the point in Book 2 where Mags walked into the toxic fog.
I wish I could get my hubby interested in the series. It's almost a primer for understanding PTSD. It would also have been really interesting discussion during the Sociology classes I've taken. Someone told me recently that...
Weird, isn't it? Trauma from very different sources, but very similar reactions.
It makes me want to know about the author. She almost "knows too much" not to have been there.
Anthony, did you feel like that at all when you left a combat zone? It's a weird thing to try to explain to anyone.
Aside from a really gripping plot that turns on a dime, and really richly developed charactors, I like that the author has been able to describe thoughts and feelings during and...
Katniss made reference to difficulty with hearing people talk about all the "normal" things going on in their lives, as if they had any weight or importance compared to what she'd been through. I remember feeling the same way, especially immediately afterwards. My kids were 8 months and 2 1/2 at...
It's not just soldiers, Anthony. That's exactly how I felt after being raped. While the rape was occuring, I would have killed in a heartbeat if I'd been able, and no one would have blamed me for it. But my brain couldn't switch gears quickly, and I couldn't turn off the "kill or be killed"...
I just finished Book 1. What struck me was the description of how Katniss reacted once leaving the arena. She could not adjust to the idea of safety. She felt like a wild maddened animal, while the world around her was proceeding with "normal". All I could think was, "YES. Yes, that's it...
I didn't get a lot of mythology in nursing school, but I had some in a Medieval English Lit class ages ago. Remind me - which one is he?
I actually had a similar thought. I wonder if that might be the intent of the author?
Yep - just reading the reviews on Amazon prior to reading, I thought is...
I'm so glad you're on Part 2 now - I didn't want to read too far ahead, and it was killing me! TOTALLY agree that Hamich looks like a poster child for PTSD. I just finished Chapter 4, in which they've just gotten Hamich to actually be functional enough to give some advice.
The You-tube trailer...
Well, you can access the forum here on it too, which is nice. For some reason I can't type a message on it for this site though, even though I can on Facebook. I've got the Fire and love the thing. I've found the books to usually be less expensive than "real" ones, and it's nice to not have to...
LOL, I'll try not to read too far ahead - but it might be tough. I think it's going to be a hard one to put down. You could always suggest a Kindle to Nicolette for a Valentine's Day present.....;)
Hi, BCMedic, I just wanted to welcome you. I'm the wife of a firefighter/ paramedic who began his EMS career as a dispatcher. I can't speak to whether or not you actually have PTSD or not, but I can say, that as an RN I frequently get anxious before the beginning of my shift when my symptoms...
What kind of rate of speed are we talking about? A few chapters a week? More? Less? I know a lot of people with PTSD have issues with concentration when reading for long stretches. That may be something to take into consideration.
Okay, I've got my copy of the first book downloaded. I'll start it tonight. Are we doing any sort of discussion questions, or just sort of chatting about it? Any thoughts? And when is your book due to arrive, Anthony?
