You're thinking the thread has to follow logical flow of the book. That is not so. Just like threads now, they divert and take different courses as discussion grows.
A person may read The Tiger's Wife in June, then add their comments to that thread. Others who have read the book, may then come back and re-participate within it from their memories and insights.
You may get two or three people who add into an older thread, that they are now going to read it at their own defined pace and discuss it all over again.
Think of it like a never ending discussion... as that is what each thread will become. You may have people revert back to earlier content due to understanding something in better depth from a later part of the book.
Threads have no real course or direction, other than when they first open for the initial reading of the book. After that, they take a life of their own, people participate as and when they see fit.
It is psychologically impossible to try and cater every mental route to please everyone based on individual thoughts and behaviours.
You may get some people who comment after each chapter, you may get someone who doesn't provide their comment until they have finished the book and the discussion is at the end.. without reading any prior discussion, as it is simply them uniquely providing their interpretation of the book.
That is the whole beauty of this... its uncomplicated as possible, not meant to create any stress for anyone, as complete freedom is with every single person on how they read, when they read, and what insight they provide or choose to respond to.
Running forums has taught me a whole lot about rules and structure, where they're needed, when they are not helpful, etc.
IMHO, a book club with the least guidelines possible seems the best method at this point. We haven't run a book club here before, so the book club as it grows will really define how further book clubs are shaped. If something doesn't work for the majority, then we change it and adapt. If it does, we leave it alone or improve it, if it can be improved.
Basically, we start very very simple, and the first few books will refine and define how further books are done. There is nothing saying the current discussion method for the first book is right. It could cause more issue than good... but we have a starting point on which we will refine upon collectively.
If better methods are majority discussed, any member of the book club can poll something in here to help refine the club. The club is a collective... but we have to start somewhere before we can learn from experience. We won't get it right from the start... guaranteed. We will collectively refine the club though with time.
