A few questions....how do you know he has PTSD? Was he diagnosed with PTSD? Did he tell you? Or you assumed it from his meds? Was just curious. Also, what kind of PTSD does he have? Situational PTSD, similar to yours from your accident? Combat PTSD from military experiences? Or possibly...
If he indeed has PTSD, if he isn't willing to accept that he has a problem, that's the first problem. I broke up with a boyfriend once because he was in full denial. That's the first step--admitting or accepting it. Secondly, its a long road. Think about this carefully. It's a very...
Definitely have felt irritable and moody at times I think it's because I couldn't express myself and felt like I was walking on eggshells ALL the time. I think anger bred inside of me.....no good,
The stress of being a supporter can DEFINITELY take a toll on you...as it did for me. I became anxious and felt like I was walking on eggshells a good part of the time. Never knew what to expect from him. I think the other part of it was because I didn't know what my future held with him and we...
@MJ91-have you mentioned to your BF that therapy might be the way to go? That's always a hard topic to bring up because of the fear of him "blowing up." And yes, I too, felt like I was getting some type of PTSD from him! When things aren't going well and since i can't vent on him I tend to get...
@Sftbll2003 -I longest I've gone is about 4 weeks. But bare in mind every "sufferer" is different. Is your BF in therapy? I take it that he isn't? My BF moved in with me several months back....long story short, my dad was ill at the time (bad timing) and when he moved here he hated the area (yet...
@Sftbll2003- In my experience, the more I push to talk, the more he isolates and the more mad he gets. Isolating helps him control the situation too. If you are only 3 months in, you need to strongly reconsider whether you want to deal with this kind of person. I'm 9 months in, and in my late...
As a supporter myself, and rather new to this myself. I'm learning that it takes a lot of patience with someone with PTSD. They will "isolate" usually after a blow up (stressor) and that can be anywhere from an hour to several days to weeks. It all depends on the person. The thing to remember...
@ Amethyst-unfortunately I "slipped" the other day and went off at the sufferer. I'm not perfect:( I was tired of holding it in...and now I'm paying the consequences....he went into complete ISOLATION. How do I go about rectifying the situation? I tried texting him a few days later and said that...
Out of curiosity...when a sufferer "isolates' what's the usually cycle consist of in one's experience?
And I know everyone's is different. For example with my BF his cycle is as such: a "stressor" initiates his PTSD (in this case I took a bite of his sandwich and dipped it in ranch salad...
@ Kahlan- are you in a long distance relationship too? I agree!! When he "blows up" and we're stuck together for whatever reason....I leave him alone and/or he leaves the house for an hr. and returns and it slowly gets better. But having "distance" against you totally stinks!
Thank you all. I will have to look up the "stress cup model" Because he is in his beginning stages of therapy, I'm sure he hasn't really learned how to handle his emotions yet. I believe he's still in the "feeling secure" with his therapist stage. I just feel like his Dr. needs to also address...
@Mtnativecohome -I know how you feel...although my relationship is going on one yr, I feel discouraged at times wondering if "he" will get better. I know it's a long road ahead for me:( Good luck to you.
I understand that it's like throwing gasoline on a fire and like I said most of the times I listenly calmy and don't say anything in return (which is very hard for me to do). but I feel like a door mat and I build up anger and frustration. Meanwhile, I don't think he's started CBT (which I've...
Thanks for your replies. I usually do walk away....or I should say, he walks away. But meanwhile, it takes a few days for him to calm down and it kills me. Being patient is very hard during all this. I get very frustrated. Also, his drop in meds, I feel has something to do with his recent blow up.
My boyfriend has complex PTSD and is in therapy (after I suggested it over and over again). He has issues from the past, an abusive father, that he needs to deal with. He's very quick to temper, has anxiety issues, and also has zero patience. His doctor recently prescribed Zoloft to him. It's...
Thanks for everyone's input. My BF is seeing a neuropsychologist. I don't know that I can attend therapy with him yet. Doesn't he have to work on his issues before we start working on ours? I really don't know.
