I work with a DBT therapist and have gone through three rounds of DBT group. It has helped me tremendously. DBT was first described by Dr Linehan. It is a way of moving forward, recognizing negative patterns and correcting behaviors. I would be interested interested in chatting with others who have used DBT.

I will receive DBT soon. Next week or the week after that I'll be admitted. Hospital food, yay... I'll report back as soon as I have some experience to share here.
Thank you for opening this thread, it's good to hear positive things about the therapy I'll undergo :)

Thanks for the links! I tried an outpatient group program in Toronto a couple of years ago. The material itself was helpful but I didn't keep it up afterwards so the skills didn't really stick. I'm going to check out those links.

I will be starting Dbt therapy with in the next couple weeks. I'll let you know how it is going. Glad it is helping you, gives me hope.

There are also some wonderful workbooks you can buy. If anyone wants to work on some DBT skills we can try and do that here informally. I think it would be a great way to help one another.

Bloom-have you gone through all of the modules of DBT? Do you work with a DBT T? My T is a DBT doc and for the mt part he is pretty good. This week I am not on great terms with him but that will change. Do you have a favorite part of DBT? I like wise mind exercises. They help me a lot.

I'm in the middle of module 3.

My T. is a CBT T.

I do think the mindfulness is the skill I've gotten the most out of so far...that and wise mind.

The interpersonal effectiveness has really helped me build a tolerance to day to day annoyances.

I'm really NOT enjoying the emotion regulation module....trying to label and feel and show emotions...too icky. But necessary.

Here is my WISE MIND worksheet. I like it because it is simple and quick to assess an issue. Does y ours look similar?

DBT
WISE MIND

What is my goal?

Question I am exploring:

What are the facts?

What do I feel about this question? What are my emotions?

What does my body sense about this question?

PAUSE. BREATHE.

What does my wise mind say about this?

Would one of you mind explaining what DBT actually is in the 'simplist possible way'. My head is not good with the jargon and it keeps wanting to disconnect. I really like the comment above with the questions. I think working through some of those sorts of things might help me. I sure don't think I have a wise mind at the moment. a friend of mine said to me recently, 'a sick mind cannot fix a sick mind, you have to have a healthy one to help heal the sick'. This seemed to really help me so if you could tell me a bit more in the simplist of terms or where i can find out more, I would really appreciate it.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or (DBT), is a skills training therapy.

The focus of the therapy is to learn, and practice skills which teach us how to;
  • get through the day
  • tolerate distressing people, places, things
  • step back from those things which trigger us until we have enough 'distance' from them to look at them accurately
  • identify our boundaries and learn how to protect them
  • learn how to increase our personal effectiveness with other people to build our support network while protecting our boundaries
You are presented with an idea, and several different skills that could be used to handle it. You get to choose which skills you think will work for you. Free choice there. You don't have to use any of them...but the people who are doing better are the ones who are practicing them.

The skills need practice, practice, practice, both when we are distressed and especially when we are not.

I'm finding I get about one 'nugget' I can use each session, but it is WORKING for me.

Just learning and now using a few decent skills I didn't have before is making such a difference in managing my PTSD fallout symptoms.

I've been in DBT for about 7 months (I *think*)...and am about 1/2 through.

thanks for that. I have been doing that for the past 10 years or so. didn't know it had a specific name. I seem to just wander around in a daze.... I just do what the T says and if it works I do more, if it doesn't I go back and ask what to do next. I desperatly want a normal life back and to the outside I guess I have one, to my mental health it has gotten pretty bent out of shape. I can honestly say that if I didn't do the above every day, I would never leave my home or speak to any one. I have learnt a lot of 'nuggets' so keep going. It will really help as it helped me.
