Internet filter for triggering content

Hey guys!

Can anyone recommend a good internet filter that you can use to block triggering content? I don't want one that will only block site. I really want to be able to use social media without seeing so much shit about rape, abuse, and car accident as I find this incredibly triggering. I have thought seriously about deleted fb but it is my only method of contact for some people in my family such as old friends, extended family, bf family, etc. For the most part fb has a positive presence in my life. I just need triggers blocked. Anyways. Sorry for rambling. Hope you guys are all well!! Xoxo

@WendyVictoria Sorry, I don't. The issue with avoiding triggers is that you never deal with them. In order to be able to live in this world when you have PTSD and have triggers is to do exposure therapy and desensitize yourself from the triggers.

Avoidance does nothing to help you.

The only true filter for the internet, is to stop using the entire thing. Child filters don't even work. A child googles how to get around the filter, and done. Then you have stuff that simply isn't caught in them, things that do get caught that shouldn't. They're useless... and like above, certainly not beneficial towards helping you recover trauma and PTSD.

there are a few add-ons for chrome, that work with fb, where you can put in keywords, and it will block content containing those keywords, but it makes the site run incredibly slow

I agree with what's been said.

I know you're looking more for social media, which I think may be too complex to filter. What has worked for me sometimes is to use a child filter or a timer like forest that blocks certain sites sort of as a reminder. You can still get around them, but there are some places I know are triggering and unhelpful where I'll go if I'm feeling bad already and it's a reminder that when I'm grounded I know that.

One thing you can do with Facebook is follow more things that help you like recovery pages and if certain people are consistently upsetting to see in your feed unfollow those individuals. I totally agree that you have to deal with triggers. But I unfollow some people even temporarily because it's just better for me to check on them manually when I'm prepared and want to. But that way you can still stay friends with them, etc.

I know for myself that I am the best filter by not exposing myself needlessly to things in the environment that are reminders of trauma. However, to be brave about being in the world, which is, less face it, totally unfiltered, and being able to cope with that, I have to learn to ride the waves and manage my thoughts and body during those times.

FB and social media is a virtual space that many people dump the worst aspects of themselves, like an emotional dumping ground. I see many teens projecting their insecurities in the form of "teasing and bullying." Often they release and discharge their frustrations and negativity. They share and feed off the negativity. Many teens have decided that Social Media is "not for them" or they "take a break" from it because of its negative effects on them.

Monitor what effect things have on you and deal with them accordingly. As said above, dealing with reality will take a toll, but with so many sheer numbers of people with trauma and with PTSD, if we all filter our reality too much, nobody will know what is actually happening in our world.

Open DNS allows you to block certian things but not 100%. I use it for known malware sites. Blocks it out there before it gets into my network.

You are the filter thats much more accurate as you can not click on something triggering or looks triggering or stop reading it if you start to get triggered. Still not 100% but still better than a filter or block.

Patental controls all suck.

I agree that you shouldnt want to avoid triggering material as it leads to being less and less triggered/reactive to the same content and self awareness.

Id dump the thought of filtering triggering content and dive into lowering your reactivity and possibly DBT as that helps me to self soothe and distract at high reactivity (triggered) state. Also emotional regulation and distress tolerance, mindfulness cant hurt.

Bluecoat k9 is actually for anything and can be made to.be customized. Again, it's free. It also has its own search engine. Try it and get rid of it if you don't like it.

Bluecoat k9

Open DNS does the same thing but blocks it before it hits your network (your internet & PCs/devices connected to it).

Bluecoat k9 may be great, but I disagree with

" enhanced anti-tampering, even children can't break"

Dead Link Removed

Everything is "breakable". Nothing is 100%. I tell my customers that all the time. Don't give yourself a false sense of complete security.

It may be good. I'm not downplaying it. Just advising that anything can be taken down or gotten around. Some are easier and some harder (some are better then others) but nothing is full proof. Nor do all filter 100% of blocked content.
