Dog In Crate 12 Hours, Is This Cruel?

On the gentle leader (or what ever) thing...... I bought the one I've got from the woman who taught the class. It was like $12. She has someplace she orders them from that's fairly inexpensive. She said the main difference and most important thing is how they fit the dog. This is especially a thing with dogs who have short muzzles. Like English Bulldogs, but this could apply to Chopper too. It needs to both stay on and allow the dog to breathe.

Yeah, I was worried as his head is HUGE and like all Pits, he has a very large muzzle. He doesn't have a flat muzzle like some pits but certianly large.

I guess you could call it flat-ish but it's fatness that I was worried about.

What I got for Chip is adjustable to allow for differences like you're talking about. His nose looks like it's long enough that a gentle leader (or what ever) should fit.

I hope it works out so he's suitable and you can get him trained. It seems like it would be a good deal for both of you.

Me too! It's like my terror melts away when he is with me.

@desiderata310 do you know what kind and size? Charlie's muzzle looks not quite as wide but looks close.

I think, if they allow it, having it fitted at a pet store is a good idea. I don't want it too tight or too loose. You know?

Plus, that's a trip out lol. I said to myself earlier that it looks like I get to try out Chopper's seatbelt tomorrow to take a trip to the pet store. Hell, any place out right now is good.

ETA: Oh, and I'll post a pick with it on him.

Also, I want a vest of some sort to give him that 'work when it's on and not when it's off' feeling off the bat.

It's a large halti, I think. Petco is usually pretty good about letting you try things on and assisting you if you need it.

Try looking at a dog 'coat' for now. Once you're sure about temperament and you're close to being ready for the CGC test, you can think about getting a vest and ordering a patch that says 'service dog in training'

@aut555 ;)

Yeah. I was thinking about a vest or coat that mocks it as much as possible. I'll look around.

Yeah, some brands said large was good for golden retrievers, which are rather large and normally have large muzzles and then extra large for mastiff's and the very large dogs (and they show a mastiff wearing one whom have very flat muzzles so i know Chopper will fit in one) but then some brands show medium as the golden size and large for the mastiff size and well Amazon is rather confusing when it comes to haltis.

I do love this halti thing whether or not he becomes a service dog as I never liked the choker.

ETA: Pet Supermarket is the pet store that I know. I have to google a Petco and find one.

This thread has moved far away from the original topic/intent. The first post will continue to generate responses, and those responses are unwanted. So, rather than have users be confused, I'm locking the thread. Anyone is free to start a thread picking up where this one left off.

If the thread is about how service dogs are made, it would belong in Discussion. If it's a fun thread about sharing dog pictures, it would belong in Social. Sometimes it's hard to differentiate these things, but I think this one wouldn't have devolved so harshly if it had been in a PTSD forum instead of the social forum - that was my mistake, and I'm sorry for that.
