So true, @scout86. Kids need to learn how to think, not just memorize the "right" answers. That's a no brainer to me, but somehow it doesn't happen. I didn't get it in high school, either. That was the main reason I hated school. My brain wanted to work, but nothing there really encouraged it.

@hodge it is a "no brainer" (excellent pun intended or not) and I can say I hated *aspects* of school, sadly it was the only safe haven I had--ironic considering the neighborhood I grew up in. @scout86 I get in more trouble NOW, albeit minimal, as a teacher, for asking the "wrong" questions in order to facilitate critical thinking, tolerance and empathy (the skills I consider as essential building blocks of learning).

I went to a private school, but even so, we got a totally lamestream his-story which I detested and dropped as soon as I was able to (names, dates and "great" rulers -absolute load of horse shite )
And did not learn any formal system of logic - not even a dumbed down Boolean mathematical system

In a way, I guess that those may have been plus points, because I would probably have assumed that I already "knew" those subjects, and would probably not have been inclined to look into them any further as an adult.

As it happened, by pure chance, I've managed to hitch onto "revisionist" historians who go and root out the full story, rather than simply accepting the court historians' partial account that intentionally starts and finishes with trying to make the state look good- and that's no easy task.

And I've found the "Austrian" economists, and through them, Aristotlean and Thomist (Scholastic) verbal systems of logic, that (apart from exceptions like Grotius, Locke and Hulme) pretty much dropped out in north western Europe at the time of the religious "reformation".

There are a few good state sector education systems (eg the Italian, Finnish and the Greek (at least up to 20 years ago)), but in the English speaking world, they seem to be hopelessly dumbed down in so many respects.

But then, let's face it, look what was done to Socrates for his encouraging free thinking

And if he ever actually existed - Jesus!

The two most influential names in western civilisation, Socrates and Jesus - both killed by democracy.

You've got me thinking of the Irish minister for health, under the Fienne fail - progressive democrat - green coalition.

A minister of health who
Chain Smoked
Was morbidly obese
Had no formal qualifications in the field
Was delusional (she feared assassination and had a tax victim funded armoured limo, c'mon she wasn't worth a bullet!)...

but in the English speaking world, they seem to be hopelessly dumbed down in so many respects.

A thousand "likes"

I am a US public school anomaly, at least for a specific borough of NYC, at a specific time in recent-ish past, as I not only went on to college on scholarship, but grad school as well. Then throw in a two years worth of work toward a teaching credential. There are many other more lucrative and appreciative careers (IN THIS COUNTRY) I could've pursued. I seem to have chosen one of the most challenging, in my interpretation, for so many many reasons, both personal and political, as a result of my inability to accept status quo.

Most people would sooner die than think,
And most do.

Love this. A close friend is a philosophy professor in a thought forsaken place in this country (not entirely by choice). He quotes this constantly.

You've got me thinking of the Irish minister for health, under the Fienne fail - progressive democrat -...

EXACTLY!

While I feel it's commendable for McCain to come back to the senate to vote today, I think it was selfish and disgusting for people to ask him to do so. The man has brain cancer, is facing an uncertain future, just had surgery a week ago, and now has to jump on a plane from Az to Washington to vote on this stupid health care plan. Just disgusting IMO!!!

And now Trump is thinking about replacing Sessions. My god, this just reminds me of the Nixion days!!!!
