Do you dream and enter REM sleep with the indica?

Boyfriend has PTSD of the military variety and his sleep meds just kinda put him in a coma and not actually let him sleep fully. And without the meds he just has horrible night terrors. Just wondering if this might help him some to get a descent sleep without the bullshit

So glad it helps you! And gives me hope for myself :-)

Im confused. You say it's been really helpful but yet you're still taking anti-anxiety meds? Then what is it helping you with?

Are you talking about the marijuana bought in a legal dispensary? Because I thought that was all closely regulated and totally getting stoned should not be an option for me… I really don't want that

I always get crazy paranoid from it which is why I'm excited that it's legal now and they can control the THC levels… Maybe it's worth another try for you?

Yes, there most certainly is. I started on 1:1 THC:CBD. I use the oil. It is so much easier to dose with it. Open the bottle, use a syringe to pull up the amount I am dosing, and done! I am using the pure CBD for my pseudo seizures though. Not everyone would have those issues. So maybe a 1:1? The high CBD is more of a body stone, as opposed to the super Einstein mode I get into with the high THC.

It is a bit of a deal learning how to dose properly. For myself, I am micro dosing every hour or two. It took me a bit of time to figure out that this was the best way of dealing with my issues, and there was nobody to help me along with how to do that.

I use the 1:1 leaf to stop my night terrors and it actually helps me sleep, big time.

I vape as well at times, but I don't find that so convenient.

Yes, I bounce back and forth between Lavender** (which in this case is the actual name of the strain, it has no actual lavender in it - this is important to me 'cause I'm allergic) and lately I've been using something called Wappa** at bedtime. Lavender is an indica and Wappa is an indica-dominant hybrid. I find edibles best for sleep, though - for one thing they make me sleepier; they take a long time to kick in but then they stay with you longer, possibly through 8 hours.

Sativa-dominant strains, as opposed to indica, are much better daytime meds and are more likely to provide energy and clarity of thought. There are many strains to choose from - even in one of the most restrictive states. Everyone reacts differently to different strains. That's a difficult part of the whole thing - you're left to figure it out on your own. It's expensive and time-consuming. In my case - worth it, but for severe chronic pain, and it hasn't helped much for PTSD except for a slight reduction in nightmares.

My best daytime strain I've found so far is a sativa-hybrid called ACDC** and it has almost no THC but is CBD heavy and works wonders for the chronic pain I experience. Not so helpful with depression and anxiety, but at least it has given me a little more energy than I would have otherwise, and it has not worsened my anxiety as it does in some people - and it makes me less loopy than the THC heavy items.

(A little loopiness, though, isn't such a bad thing once in a while, in the evening or especially if you're stuck at home having a bad PTSD day. My doctor said so!! :D)

As has been written in this thread... Medical marijuana, like any medication, is NOT a cure-all and it is NOT for everyone. Think about how many SSRI's there are, Prozac and about ten others now and what do you do? A psychiatrist takes depressed patients down the list. Some people are not helped at all by SSRIs, or different types of antidepressants.

Expect to go through the same thing with MMJ, but you've got to find it out yourself. Oh, but on the plus side, you don't have to take it for 6+ weeks to determine if it is helping you.

Sometimes, along with the desired effects, I get a fast heartbeat which makes me reach for anti-anxiety medicine on occasion. Yesterday I tried a new strain and it made me SAD. It is such a weird set of effects. One strain in particular had rave reviews from fellow-PTSDers, but it gave me a panic attack. So I moved on from that one.

**Not all strains are created equal, and the names change up so you should always double check what you are taking in. This is most important when talking about west coast vs east coast... sometimes the names end up lost in transition. I'm on the east coast.

I hope some of this helps someone. There's a truly overwhelming glut of conflicting info, so this is all describing my own personal experiences.

A sativa (less tiring) or an indica (better for nighttime/sleep), or a hybrid, that does not change the fact that marijuana can lessen the amount of time spent in REM sleep - for me, this means fewer nightmares, or at least not remembering them as much. Night terrors are entirely different because they occur during deeper stages of sleep, which MJ would probably not help much..but you could give it a try.

One of the criteria for diagnosis is that the person experiencing the terrors falls back to "normal" sleep after a night terror and does not remember them once he/she wakes up. Many adults who suffer from night terrors have no idea - some of them are simply exhausted and don't know why.

But they can be extremely frightening to witness. Instead of your partner using medication, could you change anything about your sleeping habits so the terrors are less scary to you?

@Allie D. I've definitely had some trial and error with which strains work best for me. I found that the heavy Indica strain, mine is called Grape Ape, works best for me. I tried a couple of other ones that had high THC a, that just didn't work for me. I also tried a Kush, which also made me sad and somewhat depressed. I've gone back to the Grape Ape , Because it is the best for me falling asleep and having fewer nightmares. But I cannot smoke that during the day because I would literally just sleep the day away.

I have also taken "tolerance breaks" usually when I run out, and either don't have $$ or can't get to the dispensary. These breaks help me maintain the power of the medication. My state is probably the most expensive for medical mj.

I hate prescription medication, got a little leery of it when I had severe allergic reactions that landed me in the ER three times for anaphylactic shock reactions from it.

So, I've been trying MM for severe PTSD for a month or two now. I have found two strains extremely helpful.

I use a strain called Sugar Black Rose, a heavy indica, for sleep. A couple puffs just before bed and I am guaranteed 4-5 hours of uninterrupted, dreamless (or at least no bad dreams) sleep.

I recently bought some very high CBD, low THC MM from the dispensary I go to. The strain I am currently trying is called ACDC, which can be up to 20:1 CBD to THC content.

The first time I tried it, it actually completely freaked me out because of how much of an effect it had. I smoked a very small pinch of it during an anxiety attack. Since it has such a low amount of THC, there is no "buzz" or any psychoactive effect, just pure body and mind relaxation. To the point that it freaked me out because it felt so unusual to be under constant stress and anxiety.

Weird that feeling good felt so bad because it had been so long since I have had a few minutes a day that were stress free.

I'm still working on figuring it out, but I have been researching a lot on CBD effects on the body and mind. I think it is working, because since that first daytime puff, I am using it in the evening. I wake up every day without instant stress and anxiety. It helps a bit longer each day, I'm hesitant still to just try it during the day since it felt so strange to be completely anxiety free, but I feel the the CBD is definitely carrying over into the next day, but am getting there.

It's a process to figure out what works, finding the right strain, ect.

If you're wanting to try it, I would recommend researching a lot of Leafly and other websites, then talking to the people at your dispensary, and slowly work towards figuring out what works for your own body.

It can't hurt you like "traditional western medications", but treat it like a medication and find the right thing. I am hoping I have found mine, but it's still a work in progress to be a normal person again.

Biggest encouragement for me was talking to the people who were working at dispensaries in my area. 3 out of 4 were dealing with PTSD, it was telling that they went from not being able to leave the house to working at a job where they were always talking with people and not feeling like they were going to implode if they went to the corner store.

Good luck with what works to give you some relief, whether it is MM or traditional pharmaceuticals, hope you find that one thing that gets you over the hump.

I just want to chime in again here having had another experience along these lines and to reiterate how dangerous and unnecessary the psych meds are. So I just had to be totally straight for four days (I still am) after a couple years of almost daily self-medication, MJ and some drinking in the evenings. Easy, no problem, no extra anxiety no nothing. Able to go out, to interact with others, to sleep. Before you say 'oh well that just means you're not as severe as I am.' No? I have severe cPTSD. You don't have to believe me but I'll just say that I was sexually abused as a child, and leave it at that.

So, just say no to psych meds! I will never forget what it's like to try and get myself even to consider going off "my pills." No sleep, suicidal ideations yada yada. Not to mention that while on them you can't even do anything practically, and you don't even know if you feel normal or not because they make you forget what normal is. Plus I was near death from OD so many times. Mixing meds, drinking while on meds, lying to the doctors and therapist. No self-control in other words, also a not so pleasant by-product of these lovely drugs. You think opioids are killing lots of people? How about antidepressants?

Hey listen, nobody likes popping pills more than I do. Another good side effect of weed is I can't get any pain killers (my personal favorite all around drug, works for anything in a pinch) They blood test you if you go on pain meds where I am and if they get you with weed (medical or not) then no pain killers. This is good for me and bad since I really do have a condition that leaves me in chronic moderate to severe pain but, the hell with it. I don't have to deal with running out of pills. All just my humble (or not so humble) opinion. If I help anyone get off the doctor prescribed dope, it'll be worth it.

Rain, It might be the strain you are using. Indicas are more calming, less likely to cause paranoia. Look at Leafly.com or talk with a dispensary about your reaction if you are interested in trying again.

Lisa, what kinds of symptom relief are you talking about? Pain, or sleep, other PTSD related things... ? Other illnesses?
I understand if you don't want to be more specific, but I'm curious. The state system I am in, you can qualify based on a short list of ailments.

For example, I enrolled in a MMJ program 'technically' due to PTSD, - but only because my state does not recognize chronic pain or fibromyalgia as a "qualifying conditions". So I was advised to take what I could get and go forward with things to relieve pain.

For anxiety and so forth, I'm still set on with evil, evil manufactured pharmaceuticals. What can I say - they work! Sort of. ;) Nothing fixes *everything*, but it's nice to have a gentle slope up.
