I have a physical aptitude test for the career firefighters at the end of this month. It's nice to actually be able to help isn't it? I'm only a volunteer at present, but the boost to self-esteem is incredible. Just remember, a major part of getting back into working as a team, is trusting others to actually be there (that is something I have major problems with). Hypervigilance is a bastard in the training, you will be put places where they try and see if they can freak you out, just trust them and your equipment (it sounds trite, but there it is). Congratulations on passing.

I'm only a volunteer myself. Still full-time with the coastguard for now.

The idea of being back in a front-line role makes me feel so much better than I have in a long time. The feelings of helplessness and self-doubt all disappear the moment the fire gear goes on.

It's amazing how good that feels isn't it? Mad rush to get in the truck(s) and get to the job (or bushfires here as well) or the car accident or house with smoke, or burned toast setting off the alarm at the old people's home (AGAIN) at 3AM. But it's nice to be useful, especially when you are tasked with doing things without regard to who you are, merely what you can do.
