Brain Teaser Competition

Total of 10 brain teasers will be released over the week, with a maximum prize value of US$300 giveaway.

Some are easy, and will be gotten extremely quickly. Some are quite difficult and will challenge you significantly. Just remember, they are a brain teaser, and some require a little thought outside the box.

As announced, I have changed information and made these unique, so you won't get answers from Googling information from them, as they are all specifically created so nobody can Google and cheat quickly. I have Googled all and snippets of each, testing to ensure the least possible chance of any answer being shown via search. I couldn't find any of these answers via Google... so goodluck with that option if you choose it.

Afraid Of The Dark

A family of four need to get through a tunnel. It takes the father one minute, the mother 2 minutes, the son 4 minutes and their daughter, 5 minutes. There is only one torch and only two can fit in the tunnel at once.

Remember, you can only travel as fast as the slowest member, you have only one torch, and a maximum of two can fit in the tunnel at any one time.

What is the fastest time you can achieve for them to all get to the other side? Explain your answer!

16 minutes,
dad and daughter = 6 minutes
dad back with torch = 1 minute
dad and son = 5 minutes
dad back with torch = 1 minute
dad and mum = 3 minutes

Total 16 minutes.

I know its wrong I'm crap at this

13 minutes. 2 mins for father and mother together, 1 minute as the father goes back thru alone, 4 minutes for father and son together, 1 minutes for father going back alone, 5 minutes for father and daughter together, ending up with 13 minutes total.

Doh, oh well so now I've proved I'm a bear of little brain :roflmao:

13 minutes. The father and mother pair up making 2 minutes in the tunnel then the father goes back for the son making it 4 minutes longer plus the 1 minute for the father to go back to get him. Then the father goes back again adding another minute to get the daughter and she herself adds 5 minutes. Now they are all on the other side.

7 minutes. The father and mother pair up making 2 minutes in the tunnel and the son and daughter pair up making 5 minutes. So 2 + 5 = 7. After this i'm stumped. :confused:
