I want to have my nurse practitioner do my meds and get rid of the psychiatrist all together. So I called her today and asked if she would do that. She said the Effexor would be no problem, but she wasn't sure if she could prescribe the Respiridone.

Do you have any personal experience with this in Ontario, Canada? I don't know where else I would even look for this information.

thanks in advance,
Dave

Generally if they are working under a doctor they can prescribe anything because she just gets his/her approval. If she is working alone, then yes she has limitations. The government is working on reducing those limitations. You will probably have to wait for her answer.

I work in a hospital in Ontario. Bec is correct, an NP can prescribe pretty much anything (aside from certain narcotics and limited use meds) as long as the program/physician she works for has added the notation to the program's medical directives. Medical directives are written by the key stakeholders and are approved by various high level committees who ensure the need for such a directive is necessary.

It should be quite easy for her to look up. I hope that works out for you! So much easier when one person is watching over your meds.

Best,

Dave
