I have been prescribed Citalopram 20mg and was wondering if anyone on here has/is taking this medication? I'm apprehensive about beginning this medication as I have been told by my doctor it is addictive and there seem to be many side effects (which I read on the leaflet). If anyone could provide me with information as to how they are getting on with the medication, if it helps them or /and if they have developed any symptoms, this will help me greatly. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but with my long list of other medical conditions and symptoms they cause me, I don't want to end up with more. Thank you in advanced for any information you may provide :) x

I took 40-60mg - depending on how stable I was - for years. I didn't have symptoms of addiction, didn't gain weight or recognized any other side effects except for decreased sex drive and migraines if I missed taking my dose regularly for a few days. I got brainzaps when I switched to another SSRI. It might have been a sign that I didn't wean off carefully enough.

I've not had luck with Celexa or any SSRI for that matter, but everyone is different.

The brain zaps are a common side effect, especially when you titrate off the medication. Celexa should be done VERY SLOWLY, should you stop taking it.

Have you taken other SSRI before?

I have been on it for years. Have had no problems, no side effects, until recently. Have started with the brain zaps and it is driving me nuts.... Possibly time to change meds, as I have not been detoxing this med... so don't know what is causing this. But have no problems at all on this med until recently.

My best friend was on citilopram for 6 years, mostly for anxiety and her dose got up as high as 80 mg in the last couple years.

When she came off it there were no withdrawals. She began the weening off with her physician, dropping her dose slowly. But then she got impatient at 40 mg and just stopped taking it cold turkey.
Again, no withdrawals.

I think you cant go by others experiences because your going to be affected differently.

The medications I have tried have all caused side effects that outweigh the benefits.

But my friend had fantastic results in her 6 years on meds.

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance. I have began taking the medication (for about 2 weeks now) and have noticed an improvement. Im really sorry for not having thanked you all sooner but I am struggling a lot, especially when it comes to speaking to others (which has been one of the main reasons I have not been on this forum for quite some time).
