...I support Second Amendment rights. I enjoy recreational shooting. I even have a tattered musket in the garage. But like so many Americans, I recognize that there is no such thing as an absolute right, that your right to buy a military weapon without hindrance, delay or training cannot trump Daniel Barden’s right to see his eighth birthday.

I've already explained that registered title 2 full autos are so expensive that even a crappy STEN will cost more than a decent second hand car,

title 2 STENS are typically changing hands amongst full auto shooters for over $10,000 each.

On the topic of "what changed ". We also have the rise of "Reagonomics" and globalization, and a rapid increase in income inequality. .

Something these people seem to have in common is a sense of not being heard and that these acts will get them the audience they think they deserve. We also now have means of global communication. Seems like that would add to the appeal. And, I'm REALLY tired of hearing "worst mass shooting in modern American history". No good is going to come from keeping score.

In 1996, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced an amendment to the federal appropriations bill to extend the prohibition against gun ownership to those convicted of a domestic abuse misdemeanor. Lautenberg explained the need for the amendment by telling his colleagues that, in far too many cases, “the difference between a murdered wife and a battered wife is often the presence of a gun."

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia also have state laws prohibiting gun possession by domestic violence misdemeanants. The remaining states do not prohibit gun ownership by all abusers who are barred under federal law, which can create serious enforcement challenges. Even if a domestic abuser is barred by federal law from owning a gun, if state law does not include a similar prohibition, state or local prosecutors cannot bring state gun charges against the abuser.

Congress should pass the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act, introduced in 2013 by Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), which would require background checks for all commercial sales, including online, at gun shows, and through classified ads.

Commercial sales, Online purchases, already require background checks. Most vendors at gun shows are dealers and are required to do background checks. The only place where a background check isn't required is a private party sale. You get into a whole other quagmire if you get into trying to restrict the selling of private property from a federal perspective.

Most of these new law proposals are already covered under current law.

Are you certain it's a background check and not comprehensive DV laws? The DV cases that involved a fatality fell greatly after laws were written that LEO's "SHALL" arrest the primary aggressor. The arrest laws and requirements of the conditions of release have had a huge effect on DVs.

The second story...... I'd read some of that elsewhere. I'm tempted to launch in to an off topic rant about how some things are just wrong, and it doesn't matter who does them. If you roll around in the dirt with a pig, it gets to be hard to tell you're not one yourself. So maybe we need to be less "forgiving" of our "friends". And, I couldn't help buy notice that the main excuse for raping boys is the unavailability of women........ :banghead::banghead::banghead: How about the problem is that some people don't get that it's not ok to use other people for stuff they don't actually want to be used for?

CSPAN forced by Ryan to stop broadcasting. When has this happened before?

Capitol Hill Democratic lawmakers are continuing a historic sit-in on the floor of the House to demand the Republican leadership take action on gun control after the Orlando massacre left 49 people dead. The sit-in was initiated by Congressmember John Lewis, a veteran of the civil rights movement. Once he launched the sit-in, the Republican leadership ended the session—forcing CSPAN to stop broadcasting from the floor, as the House controls the cameras. But lawmakers began live-streaming the sit-in on Periscope and Facebook.

I think the reason (excuse?) for stopping the broadcasting was that the session was ended and the Republicans have gone home for their 4th of July break. (Wish the rest of us got that kind of vacation schedule!)
