News Do Americans Wonder Why The World Makes Fun Of Them? Answer Here!

As an American who owns two guns...I own them because I'm female and live alone and will wake up in the middle of the night and "check" my apartment. I own them because there are people out there who own guns and shouldn't. It seems like it's a circle. My state has very few gun laws and because I bought my guns used, there is no record I even own a gun.

Blame society not the gun. IMHO.

It's funny how the world laughs at us Americans because of our pro-gun stance. The world must think we are all a bunch of gun toting murderous freaks and the liberal media is quick to air all these stories about gun violence.

However, they don't seem to think that murder with a baseball bat ( The number one weapon used in the United States to commit murder) is news worthy, or for that matter murder with a knife or any other weapon. It makes you wonder why? Perhaps they are just using their bully pulpit to farther their own agenda?

As far as more gun-control laws; some of the areas in the United States that experiences the most gun violence are the cities and states that have the most restrictive gun laws. Gun control laws do not hinder criminals from getting guns.

Is there a problem with gun violence in America? Yes, but it is not caused by the good, honest Americans but the criminal element.

So perhaps the problem would best be solved by stricter laws punishing the criminals for their acts, than punishing the good decent citizens by restricting their rights.

I was reading through the post, and @The Albatross list the top 25 most dangerous cities in the world. Two of those cities are in my state: Detroit and Flint. These two cities have been seriously hurt by the decline of the auto industry in the state, and the subsequent loss of jobs and working population.

The city of Detroit has a serious drug and gang problem which strongly influences the violence there. Personally, if I have to go to Detroit for any amount of time, I carry my legally purchased and legal to carry firearm.

You have strict laws already for crimes... America has one of the largest, if not the largest, incarcerated people in the world. Most crimes you put people in jail for... in most other countries would warrant community service, rehabilitation programs, fines... but not jail.

Jail should be reserved for when absolutely nothing else has worked and the person just can't be gotten through to.

Ahh, but with prison you're getting back into the capitalism side of things. It is big business! Need to get the greed out of that system for it to make a difference.

Ah... I fear Australia is going down this ugly road... slowly privatising more public companies and assets. Things that are vital to the country functioning as a collective, are slowly being sold off from Government to privately owned companies. Not much good has come to date from any of these things, other than infrastructure getting worse, profits getting more, and all the money disappearing away from the country and public.

@anthony I read the article you posted in the opening of this thread by Petersen, and it really amazed me how many statistics she states without citing any of it.
I personally read many of her statistics with a great grain of salt, and I think there is a good reason she did not list her sources.
This is a paper written by a person affiliated with an ultra-liberal university in an ultra-liberal state. Her point might be valid regarding alcohol and firearms, but where she says that binge drinking and heavy drinking is more common among gun owners than not owners; I want to see her source.
I personally found it a poorly written argument, and think it is just more of the liberal propaganda.

There is another thing our President and his party want to do; anyone seeing a physiologist or a mental therapist be denied their second amendment rights. This would include suffering with PTSD.
