God created man,
but seeing him so feeble,
He gave him the dog.

"the good lord in his ultimate wisdom gave us
three things to make life bearable, hop, jokes and
dogs, but the greatest of these was dogs."

Robyn Davidson

I love my pets more than other people all the time.

Something I just read:

"In the past two decades it has become widely recognized that when adults or children are too skittish or shut down to derive comfort from human beings, relationships with other mammals can help." --Bessel Van Der Kolk ("The Body Keeps the Score")

I like people, but I'm very skittish and usually somewhat shutdown. This doesn't matter with my pets. They aren't somehow turned off by my detachedness or moods. They always want to be close to me no matter what. They keep me real sometimes.

I tend to do more rescuing, passing them to care of other people, these days. It's scary enough to be bonded to people, thanks I'll pass about pets. (I'm not going into all those rage problems I had about people threatening my last pet. Realized I care too damned much and not about the people in question, it's a whole part of feelings I haven't yet processed even remotely, and I'm simply not having anyone near me that can be such a weapon against me until I get that mess sorted inside.)
