I am so freaking proud of my state! My state's delegates all just walked off the floor with delegates from a few other states. Yes!!! (I'm texting and emailing them now... Way to go!!!)

What happened today with this petition and the delegates is going to be hotly debated for some time to come. It wouldn't have changed the nomination of Trump, but it would have ensured the people knew Trump was NOT supported by all of the GOP, not nominated by all of the GOP.

Instead, Trump silenced his opposition at the convention today.

He will do the same to the country.

But I hope there will always be people who will walk out and say enough.

So stinking proud of my state's delegates. Yay for waking out and making their vote/voice against Trump known peacefully. Trump didn't win my state's vote on those rules and he couldn't strong arm them or out scream them to get it either.

I told the national delegates I'm in contact with this: if they won't let you vote against Trump, keep walking out of every damn vote! Keep going! Good job! We support you!

I just got more info about what happened and why the vote was denied. Dear Lord help us. If this is how Trump runs a convention vote that is already sure to go in his favor, congress is gonna get screwed in their attempts to stop/slow Trump.

On a happier note, I love the mellow CSPAN narrators. It's almost hilarious against the backdrop of republicans (even senators and congressmen and women) screaming at each other.

I'm not seeing it in the news, but I have been able to confirm that delegates who were legally and honestly on the petition for the roll call vote were threatened with arrest unless they removed their name.

Arrest. Trump and the RNC were threatening to arrest delegates for a legal petition. That's how they got the delegates to remove their names themselves and why the crap that happened today happened.

If what the delegates did was illegal, then arrest them. Period. Don't threaten them, do it. I can't confirm if it was legal or not but if they committed illegal acts by putting their name on the petition, or something else, arrest them. All these delegates are elected and responsible to follow the law.

But that's not what happened. The RNC said remove your name, i.e. remove your vote, or ELSE we will have you arrested. That's screwed up.

And that's what I'm being told.

When there is news media verification, I will post here.

A roll call vote would not have denied Trump the nomination. It simply would have made dissenting votes documented. That's it!

And yet, this is what Trump and the party of Trump has done.

this is not new territory for the Repugnant party

Thanks, @Anarchy - I was actually kind of hoping you'd see the question because I figured you'd know the answer.

And I guess if the repubs have done it, the dems at some point have probably, too. Neither is immune it seems.

I've never been a believer in the party system - and especially not the two party system. I wish that every vote counted, and that the votes were...well, always counted, and not f*cked with. The electoral college, the mis-handling of overseas ballots, excluded ballots...but I don't know how one would manage really counting every vote, either.

I am now hearing that the secretary of the convention was at one point hiding behind a curtain w/ armed guards to avoid receiving the signatures for an inbound delegate vote.

This is a video of a delegate promising more "insurgency" (this is one of the leading neverTrump delegates.) I haven't watched it but I've been told it is a sign that more chaos will happen.

There have been plenty of "convention floor fights" before. Refusing to seat a delegate happens all the time. There are long pre-convention fights over "credentials" even at state conventions. This happens for both democrats and republicans in any contested party process. It's rarely about actual credentials, but different factions wanting their delegates seated. I'm not saying it's ok, not at all, but it is common.

I totally agree with you @Anarchy, these parties are in it for themselves at the national level. Grassroots, not as much. But the national level is where the fight is for power of the party above all else.

Most everyone I know in the GOP is very thrown by this, including people who have been to national conventions before.

Even if this nonsense has happened before, it shouldn't be happening at all.

What's different is that this is not actually a contested convention, and the threats of arrest - it's a high level of intermingling state power with party power. It's very a strong-armed way to shut down any convention floor fight (and I don't mean a physical one, just one through votes and petitions.) Trump is prevent the more typical debate with law enforcement...

It's kind of hard to imagine "the law" being involved in a vote at a convention. It's a private club. They make their own rules, but I don't see where they'd have the force of law. Seems like the worst they could do is kick someone out of the club.

Hitler was elected. The US is truly repeating the patterns of history and I hope the country gets off...

I´m not sure about that though. I recall watching a documentary about him, where it was said that many murders of prominent politicians (who opposed him) were carried out prior to election. They would have probably voted against him, and he knew it. In that way Hitler was actually a dictator. As far as I know from browsing on the internet for two seconds right now, he proclaimed himself dictator of a totalitarian state to discourage any rebellion.

The reason he stayed in power was also part because he knew to keep his concentration camps and such atrocities hidden from sight. Many ordinary Germans were living near concentration camps and were not even aware of it - they were forced to help clear out all the dead bodies when the allied forces came in. It´s important to be aware of the context, I think.
