Feeling That My Meds Don't Work

Hello everyone, so I was put on Bupropion by the VA hospital for my PTSD. They said it would help me lessen my depression, anxiety, paranoia and also may help me sleep better as i am a bit of an insomniac. After taking it I felt great for the first few days and even had some extra energy that I was really lacking, but after those initial days I felt like I was right back to my old unmedicated self. This went on for a while and I can't understand why they don't make me feel like the way they did initially. I know your body could build an immunity to the effects but this is ridiculous.

It even got to the point where I took myself off them, but my wife got really mad because I wasn't taking them and she says I need them. Why do I need a med that doesn't work?

I am so lost right now on this because I want to feel better but with the meds not seeming to work and then my spouse getting all over me I have just fell into a well I can't see the opening for.

Has anyone been on this med and can anyone give me some advise. Thanks.

How long did you take them regularly before giving up? They say it takes 6-8 weeks for you to feel the full effect. However, the first few days on on any psychoactive medication will feel vastly different in some way as your body adjusts.

Hi Dorian

Different meds work differently for different people, and it can often be a case of trial and error to find something that works for you long term. It's not advisable to take yourself off medications, because the withdrawal effects can make you feel worse. I really suggest you go back to the Doctor that prescribed this medication in the first place. It could be a case of adjusting your dose, or changing to something else. If you really don't want to take medication, that is fine - it's a personal choice. But you are not going to just get better over night. And either way medications alone will not solve PTSD. You don't mention therapy, and I haven't read any of your other posts. The only real way to learn to manage PTSD symptoms, and solve your insomnia in the long term is by talking about your trauma, and trying to reduce the negative effects it has on you.
