I am convinced that anyone can learn to fix shit, I train apprentices to design and build shit and am in the lifelong process of training 3 kids and their spouses to fix shit. If I can learn it, anyone can
I really thought that until I met my ex. The man couldn't swing a hammer. To say "not mechanically inclined" doesn't even tip the iceberg. He had virtually no spatial awareness, no common sense, and believed directions (written or spoken) were an attempt to control him. On the upside, he cut the windshield washer fluid hose instead of the break line, and other equally :O_o:??? things when he would tamper with my car! Took me ages to figure out all his questions for a month about my breaks were related to the fact that my wipers no longer worked. Snort. Asshole. But on the upside, an incompetent asshole! :D
So have some more self confidence! Just because you can do it, doesn't mean it's so easy any moron could! Some people are geniuses (TheEx actually is, profoundly gifted, genius, tomato tomahto), and can't remember lefty loosy righty tighty! & It just doesn't parse for them that nails and screws are different (both in use and application), or why nuts are necessary if you've already screwed the bolt in... And will happily expound on why physics is wrong (because they say so). But whether willful ignorance or actual incompatibility (hey, I don't grok anything electrical! f*cking wizards, electricians!), not everyone is mentally capable of understanding everything, and even of those who are, not everyone has the inclination, no matter how badly they might want to learn it.
