I don't talk about it much with friends or family. It hurts them that they can't fix it so I don't do it anymore. I come here where people know about PTSD and will call me out for stuff and support me when I need it. I realize friends can't tolerate hearing a lot. I also go to a depression and anxiety group. it helps a lot.

@DharmaGirl I feel that is probably the best approach. It's sad when you can't rely on family or friends for unconditional emotional support. It seems so easy for people without mental illness to expect this from others; In my wiser years, I find it is too high of an expectation from even romantic partners. The stigma and alienation surrounding mental illness really sucks sometimes.

I'm not sure that anyone can rely on family or friends for unconditional emotional support, including those without mental illness. Few people are capable of being such angels, even towards their nearest and dearest.

I agree with others about finding other outlets for talking about it, like here on the forum.

I'm confused about your therapy situation. You're having daily therapy for eight weeks in a trauma programme? But they're not helping you with your reactions and overwhelm? What sort of programme is it?

A very poorly planned outpatient program. It was supposed to be supplementary to ongoing therapy, but because I didn't have a therapist and had a great need for support, I was fast-tracked into it within a month of applying.

This forum has been great for support - the relationship is over now and I am moving forward, but this has given me great insights into expectations of others as supporters and what not to do for the next time.
