Mirtazapine

So I've been on mirtazapine for about 7 weeks now, and I don't feel ANY better. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what did you do?

My care coordinator said she will have a word with the psychiatrist but I'm still panicking. I really don't like these meds but I'm too sacred to come off them because friends and family have said they have noticed a positive change and that it would be dangerous to come off them?

Help!

I haven't heard of that drug before. But it normally takes a while for medication to kick in. I would give it some more time unless it's causing bad side effects. The positive change others have noticed is proof is may be helping.

Welcome to the Forum @HAlex .

I was put on mirtazapine 15ml for sleep approx 6 months ago. They took about eight weeks to start working properly but once they did I found them to be a great help.

I am now on 7.5ml a day to help ease me off to sleep.

I would suggest making an appointment with the prescribing Doctor - psychiatrist if you are having issues with them.

Please do not just stop taking them as I did a few months ago, I really rattled and ended up having nightmares.

Persevere with them and I am sure if others are noticing a marked positive change then they are having the desired effect.

I abhor taking Pills of any kind as I am on heavy strength pain-killers for a spinal injury for the rest of my life but I will say after taking promethazone, amitriptyline and zopiclone over the months prior to being prescribed Mirtazapine I really do find them to be the best medication yet and as I have beeen on them for some time they really have worked for me.

Kindest regards and :hug:s if you accept them

@Ayesha maybe you know it better by it's brand name Remeron (or Avanza)

I had a similar response to 30mg Mirtazapine, very little to no change for me except for a slight reduction in nightmares (though not wake-ups). My biggest fear was that if it was working and I was this down with it, I definitely wouldn't be able to cope without it. Previously I had ended up staying on a medication that didn't help because it didn't make things worse either, but I was tired of nothing working. At the end of the day you deserve to be happy and if you need medication, it should be one that actually works. I'd recommend talking to your psychiatrist and voicing your concerns both about this medication and coming off of it to start a new one.

In my case, my Psychiatrist started changing me onto Duloxetine initially without tapering off of the Mirtazapine and boy am I glad he did, it seemed to correct the Mirtazapine and me all at once, for the first time since I was a kid I didn't feel so worn down and broken by the world. When I started to remove the Mirtazapine, I became shakier, the nightmares came back in full force and my mood plummeted. So after protesting that the Mirtazapine hadn't worked I ended up staying on both the old and the new medication, certainly not what I expected but it's amazing to feel this way :) although the nightmares are still here (but that's nothing new). Also, amusingly it's a combination that's known as Limerick Rocket Fuel!

I'm not recommending this for you or suggesting you will have the same treatment, my story is only there to give and example of a work around that worked for both me and my psych doc as I never had to be medless. I'm sure there are others, talk to your doc and see. Good Luck!

It worked very well pretty quick for me - within a week - but I was also on Venlafaxine at the same time. The combination of those two meds are infamous - referred to as 'Californian Rocket-Fuel' because for some it works really well.

Ah thank you all so much for the advice and sharing your experiences!. I've decided to carry on with them until I can meet with my doc and hopefully I will see an improvement soon!.

You have all been a great help!.

.
